All 14 crew rescued after Indian vessel hit off Oman Coast

14 mai 2026

An Indian cargo ship, Haji Ali, sank off the coast of Oman after being hit by a suspected drone or missile while sailing from Somalia to Sharjah with livestock.

MSV Haji Ali, registered in Gujarat’s Salaya Port, was struck near Limah around 3:30 am by a suspected drone or missile while sailing from Berbera (Somalia) to Sharjah. It triggered a massive explosion and a fire that destabilised it, causing it to sink.

All 14 Indian crew members, including a tandel (second-in-command), managed to send a distress signal and evacuate into lifeboats before being rescued by the Oman Coast Guard and taken safely to Deeba port.

The incident has intensified concerns over maritime security amid rising tensions linked to the Iran–US conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs called the attack “unacceptable,” stressing that civilian mariners and commercial shipping must not be targeted.

No group has assumed responsibility for the attack, and investigations are ongoing. BRICS foreign ministers, including Iran’s, are currently meeting in New Delhi.
