China to participate in Bharat Mobility Expo after 5 years

15 Jan 2025

Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 is the nation’s biggest motor show. 40 new products are expected to launch this year.

Indo-Chinese ties worsened in early 2020 after a border clash and visa misuse by Chinese executives. India banned many Chinese apps, including TikTok and Shein. Chinese automakers like JSW MG Motor and BYD couldn’t attend the mobility show.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been working on resolving border tensions. It granted a no objection in principle, allowing China to participate. The government started granting visas to Chinese technical professionals working with companies that secured approvals under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

China is among the global leaders in EV technology and battery manufacturing. India imports up to 30% of its auto part imports from China. In FY2024, India bought around $6 billion worth of Chinese components.

EV sales may surge from 100,000 units sold in 2024 to double in the next two years. 15-20 EVs, including the luxury segment, could be launched this year.
