Govt to launch ‘Sahkar Taxi’ services this year

27 mars 2025

The app-based ride-hailing service will allow cooperative societies to enrol two, three and four-wheelers.

The Ministry of Cooperation has been developing Sahkar Taxi, an app-based ride-hailing service, for over three years. It will be launched this year.

It will remove the intermediaries and transfer profits from the rides directly to the drivers. The government will also establish a cooperative insurance company to offer drivers coverage for their vehicles and other essential needs.

Several state governments have launched similar services in the past – Kerela Savaari (2022), which shut down, Yatri Saathi in Kolkata (October 2023), and Namma Yatri in Karnataka (November 2022).

Uber and Ola have been facing criticism over their pricing practices. The two companies received notices from the Central Consumer Protection Authority regarding reports suggesting that their apps altered prices when a user booked a cab using an iPhone rather than an Android device.

An X post in December 2024 showed different prices for the same Uber ride booked through two different smartphones.
