India signs first-ever deal with the US to import LPG

17 nov. 2025

Indian public sector companies signed a one-year contract to import LPG from the US.

India’s public sector companies will import 2.2 million tonnes of LPG in 2026, which amounts to around 10% of the country's annual LPG imports. The LPG will be sourced from the US Gulf Coast.

The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, called it a ‘Historic first’. Executives from Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum recently travelled to the US to discuss the deal with major American producers.

To date, India imports 90% of its LPG from suppliers in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia alone supplies one-third of India’s imports. India occasionally turned to the US due to logistical and pricing reasons, as well as trade dynamics.

The Union Minister shared how global LPG prices soared by 60% last year, but Ujjawala scheme beneficiaries paid ₹500–550 per cylinder, against the actual cost of ₹1,100.

This deal indicates changing market conditions and strategic trade negotiations with the US.
