The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the largest ammunition contract for India to date to procure the ammunition.
The Indian government is ready to procure ammunition worth ₹10,200 crore for the Army’s Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems.
Two contracts will be signed to procure highly explosive pre-fragment ammunition (worth ₹5,700 crore) and Area Denial Munitions (worth ₹4,500 crore) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE).
The Pinaka system was designed to offer the Army a powerful, multi-barrel rocket launcher capable of quick and accurate heavy firepower. Due to its success rate, the Army already deploys ten of these rockets and is likely to use more.
The original version had a firing range of 37.5 kilometres, but the improved Extended Range Pinaka can fire up to 75 kilometres.
DRDO transferred the technology to Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) to make the ammunition for the rockets. The contracts will be signed by March 31st.
