CMA CGM to invest $300 mn in box ships in India

15 Oct 2025

This is India’s first-ever container ship order placed by an international mainline ship operator.

The French shipbuilding conglomerate and the world’s third-largest container carrier, CMA CGM, signed a letter of intent with the Cochin Shipyard to invest $300 million in building container ships.

CMA CGM will build six LNG-powered container ships at the Cochin Shipyard.

Also called Box Ships, each can carry 1,700 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and run on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

India currently holds below 1% of the global shipbuilding market share and is ranked 16th worldwide in the industry. It aims to be in the top 10 by 2030 and top 5 by 2047. The Cabinet approved a package of ₹69,725 crores in September.

India’s first locally made aircraft carrier, the largest dredger, and several naval ships and vessels for European clients were built at the Cochin Shipyard.

Cochin Shipyard recently tied up with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (KSOE), one of the top shipbuilders in the world.
