Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has begun to ease, allowing most India bound energy shipments to clear the chokepoint after days of disruption.
With the reopening of Hormuz, only 12 vessels remain and are expected to transit soon.
This development coincides with Iran signalling readiness to resume crude exports to India following the lifting of US‑led sanctions. Iranian minister Mohsen Paknejad met India’s Hardeep Singh Puri at the Brics energy ministers’ meeting, where he reiterated this interest.
India is evaluating the proposal carefully. With China currently the main buyer of Iranian crude, India’s entry could diversify Iran’s customer base and strengthen its pricing flexibility.
30 India‑linked vessels have already crossed Hormuz, and a few more are still waiting to transit. Around half of India’s crude, 70% of LPG, and 90% of LNG normally pass through Hormuz.
Before the conflict, approximately 135 vessels crossed Hormuz daily (all nations combined).
