India, Croatia to strengthen trade ties

20 Jun 2025

This was the first visit to Croatia by an Indian Prime Minister after diplomatic ties were established in 1992.

While visiting Croatia on June 18th, PM Modi announced enhanced defence cooperation between the two countries. India invited Croatian firms to invest in its coastal infrastructure development and shipbuilding. India will invest in Croatian semiconductors, clean tech, IT, and pharma industries.

India will share its space expertise, and educational institutes of both countries will conduct research projects together.

India finalised a five-year cultural exchange programme with Croatia and will soon sign a mobility agreement to facilitate people’s movement between the two countries.

Croatia’s major ports, Rijeka, Ploce, and Split, are a part of the EU’s TEN-T network and support trans-European trade. These can offer an alternate entry into Europe in the troubled Suez Canal and Red Sea routes.

Croatia is an EU and NATO member and can offer India access to their regulatory systems. This can help the India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which are delayed due to regulatory hurdles.
