It also features a 1.27 km-long runway used for developing Medium- and High-Altitude Long-Endurance drones for the Indian Army.
PM Modi inaugurated India’s first private sector aerial technology development facility in Nagpur on Sunday. The site is run by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL).
The facility will test advanced Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), including loitering munitions, as well as Medium and High Altitude Long Endurance (MALE and HALE) drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Loitering munitions are aerial weapons that hover over a target for a set period before striking with precision.
The SDAL facility also features Pinaka rocket systems, counter-drone systems, anti-tank guided missiles, the Bhargavastra (a counter-drone system), and the Bhaumastra (a mine detection system).
Its MALE UAVs can fly up to 30,000 feet with a capacity for staying in flight for up to 48 hours. HALE UAVs can fly for days at an altitude of up to 65,000 feet.
SDAL has submitted a proposal to the Indian Air Force for the adoption of its UAVs.
