Vehicle exports to Japan rose from $220.62 million in FY24 to $616.45 million in the first three quarters of FY25.
The growing demand for India-made cars increased threefold between FY24 and FY25. Maruti Suzuki leads passenger vehicle exports with 42% market share, followed by Hyundai (24%), Kia (13%), Volkswagen, and Nissan.
Maruti exports Jimny, Fronx, and Baleno to Japan, where Jimny saw 50,000 bookings within four days of its launch.
Maruti launched the Jimny in India in June 2023 and exports it to Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. This car saw desolate sales figures in India, with 730 units sold in December 2023, and just 163 in January 2024.
Similarly, Honda exported 45,167 units of the Elevate SUV to Japan, compared to half this number sold in India. It is sold as WR-V and is the first made-in-India car to be exported to Honda’s birthplace.
Compact SUVs constitute 25% of India’s car exports, and Japan, Germany, China, South Korea, and the US are the top destinations.
