India gets new labour laws eff Nov 21

24 Nov 2025

29 central labour laws have been consolidated into four Labour Codes.

India’s Code on Wages (2019), Industrial Relations Code (2020), Code on Social Security (2020), the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (2020) came into effect on November 21st, 2025. They replace the old 29 labour laws.

What they promise:

  • Standardised national floor wage offering consistent calculation of benefits like gratuity, overtime at twice the wage rate, and leave encashment.

  • Written appointment letters made mandatory for all employees. Existing staff may get new letters within 3 months.

  • Coverage extended to unorganised sector and gig workers. They must contribute 1-2% of the company’s annual turnover.

  • The new scheme may offer health insurance, maternity, and old-age protection benefits.

  • Weekly working hours limited to 48.

  • Guarantee of 100% health security for workers in hazardous sectors.

Employers need to implement immediate adjustments in HR policies, compensation structures, and compliance.
