The CCPI report was released at the annual United Nations climate conference.
India secured 10th spot on the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI 2025), two spots down from the last time. The primary reasons are its low per capita emissions and rapid transition to renewable energy sources, especially large-scale solar infrastructure projects and the Rooftop Solar Scheme. Compared to the global average of 6.6 tons of carbon emissions, India’s per capita emissions are 2.9 tons.
63 nations, including the European Union, evaluated in the CCPI are responsible for 90% of the emissions. Germanwatch, Climate Action Network International, and the New Climate Institute assess the largest carbon emitters based on emissions, climate policy, and renewables and rank the nations. They leave the first three places empty as no country has been able to achieve a ‘very high’ rating, checking all criteria.
Denmark is the highest-rated country, ranked fourth on the index. The US and China, the highest emitters, rank 57th and 55th, respectively.
