This made-in-Russia warship has engines made in Ukraine.
On December 9th, India commissioned INS Tushil at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. It is an upgraded Krivak III class frigate (a warship smaller than a destroyer, bigger than a corvette).
It has been constructed as part of a USD 2.5 billion deal signed between India and Russia in 2016 to make four stealth frigates for the Indian Navy.
Its construction began on July 12th, 2013. The ship completed all trials by September 24th, 2024. It will reach India almost combat-ready and join the Indian Navy’s Sword Arm. Russia has built six such ships and delivered to India between 1999 and 2013.
The ship was expected to be delivered by the end of 2022, but a lag in the engine’s delivery from Ukraine delayed it.
INS Tushil carries engines from Zorya Masproekt, the Ukrainian giant that produces marine gas turbines and powers around 30 Indian Navy ships.
