Kerela raises Class 1 age limit to 6 yrs, Karnataka demands relaxation

3 Apr 2025

The Karnataka government had to raise the age criteria from 5 to 6 years from 2025-26.

The Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 (RTE Act 2009) and Rules 2012 and the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) establish the minimum age limit for enrolling a child in Class 1 at six years completed as of June 1. The Union Government has asked and reminded state governments to ensure its implementation.

The Kerela government revised the Class 1 admission criteria to six years. Karnataka had to implement the same in the academic year 2025-26. However, parents are still waiting for the government's announcement while seeking a relaxation on this criterion so that their children can participate in competitive exams and government jobs on time.

The NEP states that over 85% of a child’s cognitive development happens before the age of six. Experts also warn against the negative impact of early admissions, suggesting that children are better prepared for formal education after the age of six.
