Mumbai T1 airport to undergo redevelopment from Nov 2025

31 Jan 2025

The construction is expected to end by 2029.

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 1 will undergo redevelopment from this year end to increase the handling capacity by 42% to 20 million passengers annually.

CSMIA is owned and operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Limited, that owns 74%, and Airports Authority of India that owns the rest 26%.

Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 and the ready-for-opening Navi Mumbai airport will cater to the passenger traffic during the redevelopment.

The new terminal will be redeveloped in phases, beginning with demolition in November 2025, followed by construction. It will mainly cater to domestic traffic, with a potential integration for international flights in the future.

District cooling systems, next-gen electrical substations, direct metro access, and biometric security checks will be a few upgrades to the terminal. It will also include a Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) integrating air, road, and rail transport.
