The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued alerts for high-altitude areas in the US and Canada as well.
India and several high-altitude regions in the US and Canada are on heightened alert after the Sun released a series of powerful solar flares. It raised concerns about radio blackouts, satellite disruptions, and potential impacts on aviation navigation and power systems.
ISRO is closely monitoring over 50 operational satellites, with ground stations issuing alerts and keeping contingency plans ready. NASA observed repeated explosive activity between February 1 and 2.
The Indian region widely uses high frequency radio. Its growing satellite infrastructure makes it particularly sensitive to space weather disturbances. Canada has a history of major geomagnetic storm-related blackouts, including the 1989 Quebec blackout and the 2003 disruptions.
Scientists note that the Sun is currently in its solar maximum, an 11-year cycle marked by heightened sunspot activity and increased likelihood of solar storms. Indian researchers had anticipated this surge and issued early warnings based on magnetic field analysis.
