Sanae Takaichi becomes Japan’s first female Prime Minister

22 Oct 2025

She won a majority in both Parliamentary houses.

Takaichi, 64, is a conservative who has been outspoken about her criticism of China. She won 237 votes in the Lower House and 125 in the Upper House, thus making it a comfortable win.

Takaichi is a former economic security and interior minister. She graduated from Kobe University with a degree in Business Management and served as a congressional fellow in the US.

She joined the Japanese Parliament in 1993 as an independent and joined the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in 1996.

She was an avid drummer in a college band, and her favourites include Iron Maiden and Deep Purple. She would often play too hard and keep four pairs of spare drumsticks as backups.

She often calls the late British leader Margaret Thatcher her idol and shares her conservative and nationalist views. Her mother was a police officer, and her father worked with a car manufacturer.
