< Back India updates plastic waste management rules 8 Jul 2025 The Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2025, were formulated by the Ministry of Environment. India’s Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is implementing new pollution control rules from July 1st. These regulations mandate that all plastic packaging have a barcode, a QR code or a unique ID linked to CPCB registration. The Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners (PIBOs) will comply with Rule 11 that mandates enhanced labelling and traceability for packages. The CPCB will publicly list compliant parties. There will be daily escalating fines for non-compliance, as well as conviction for repeated and serious violations. This is bound to enhance accountability for companies that fall under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. The aim is to curb plastic pollution and encourage companies to enhance their recycling infrastructure, such as PET recycling plants, and utilise AI-based sorting, as seen in Google’s CircularNet model, which Saahas Zero Waste uses. < Back India-EU FTA to simplify Schengen Visa Applications 29 Jan 2026 Indians can expect a faster, more predictable, less bureaucratic Schengen process, although not a guaranteed approval. The India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will phase out tariffs on over 97% of EU exports to India and grant preferential access to 99% of Indian exports to the EU. It could increase bilateral trade by 41–65% and raise incomes by 0.12–0.13% of GDP in both regions. As part of the FTA, the EU has committed to modernising and simplifying Schengen visa procedures through full digitalisation, reducing long processing times and document‑verification issues that currently hinder Indian travellers. EU–India trade has grown by ~90% in the last decade. In 2024, EU exports to India reached €48.8 billion. Indian IT, textiles, chemicals, machinery, agriculture, and processed foods sectors gain preferential access to the EU’s high-value market. The European firms benefit from reduced Indian tariffs and clearer regulatory frameworks. India and the EU together represent 21.1% of global GDP and 23.4% of the world’s population. < Back India 1st hydrogen-powered train to launch on Jan 26 7 Jan 2026 The train will be launched on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. The train, designed and built indigenously at ICF Chennai, is expected to reach speeds of up to 110 km/h. It is among the world’s most powerful hydrogen locomotives with an output of 2,400 kW across its two power cars. Although Germany and China already run hydrogen trains, India’s hydrogen train is the longest built for broad gauge (5ft 6 in). The project is a collaboration between Indian Railways, the Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO), and Spanish partner Green H. It has two driver power cars and eight metro-style passenger coaches. The train aims to reduce diesel consumption and pollution significantly. Trial runs have been completed successfully. After the pilot run, a joint performance report will be submitted to the central government to determine the feasibility of wider deployment across India. < Back Reliance Consumer Products records ₹3,000 crore sales in FY2024 18 Apr 2024 Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL) is a branch of Reliance Retail. It began operations on November 30, 2022. Reliance Retail Venture’s Consumer Products arm, RCPL, recorded sales worth ₹3,000 crore in its first full year of operations, 2023. Among RCPL's brands, Emami clocked ₹3,400 crore in sales, Campa Cola contributed ₹400 crore, and the market leader in oral care, Colgate-Palmolive, recorded ₹5,226 crore. Reliance acquired Campa Cola in 2022 for ₹22 crore. It is widely available in Andhra Pradesh, India’s largest cola market. It currently relies on contract manufacturers for bottling but intends to set up its own plants by raising around ₹500-700 crore from Reliance Retail. Reliance Retail infused ₹277 crore in RCPL in February and March 2023 through a subscription of fully convertible debentures. They intend to bridge the supply gap by strategically establishing bottling plants across the country that are closer to main consumer hubs and Kirana stores. < Back Volcanic ash expected to leave India by today evening 26 Nov 2025 The plume entered Gujarat and began moving eastward to Rajasthan, NCR, and Punjab at 100-120 kmph. The Ethiopian volcano Hayli Gubbi erupted on November 23 rd after almost 10,000 years, thus triggering flight disruptions across the region. The ash and plume have already reached the North and Northwest region, impacting Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, NCR, and Haryana. Several carriers, including IndiGo and Akasa, cancelled and diverted their flights to avoid the ash-impacted airspace, even from South India. Air India has cancelled 13 flights since Monday. Delhi witnessed seven cancellations and 12 delays for international arrivals and departures on Tuesday. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Meteorological Department confirmed that ash was confined to altitudes of 10-15 km. However, it may cause a hazy sky, a rise in temperature, and some ash precipitation. Authorities have advised wearing masks as a precaution against a dip in air quality. < Back New cab hailing startups offering better incentives to drivers 13 Mar 2024 Rapido levies a subscription fee, and inDrive charges a 10-12% commission compared to Uber and Ola’s 25-30%. Competition from new startups is forcing established ride hailing companies to lower their commission structures for drivers. Rapido bike taxi, backed by Swiggy, scrapped its commission model to introduce a subscription fee for cab and auto drivers. This amounts to ₹9-29 per day. California-headquartered inDrive charges a 10-12% commission, less than half that of Uber and Ola’s 25-30% fee. Namma Yatri, backed by ONDC, offers its Software as a Service (SaaS) to auto drivers for ₹25 per day or ₹3.5 per trip for up to ten rides and free of cost afterwards. This works as a loyalty programme and lures drivers to spend more time on the app to get more rides and an ROI on the daily fees. Uber launched the Uber Pro programme, offering drivers milestones-linked benefits like cheaper vehicle maintenance, motor insurance, area preference, and micro-credit offerings. < Back Japan Air flight plummets nearly 26,000 feet midair 2 Jul 2025 The Boeing 737-800 Dreamliner fell from 36,000 feet to almost 10,000 feet due to a sudden cabin pressure failure. On June 30th, 6:53 p.m. local time, Japan Airlines flight JL8696 experienced a cabin pressure failure, causing it to fall nearly 25,000 feet in under 10 minutes. The plane was flying under a code-share agreement between Japan Airlines and its low-cost subsidiary, Spring Japan, from Shanghai Pudong to Tokyo’s Narita. It was carrying 191 passengers. One passenger heard a “muffled boom”, after which oxygen masks were automatically deployed, and the flight attendants panicked. The plane made an emergency, safe landing at Kansai Airport, Osaka, at 8:50 pm local time. Japan Airlines offered ¥15,000 (around $104) and overnight accommodation as compensation. Air India Boeing 777 flight from Delhi to Vienna on June 14th faced a similar malfunction, after which the plane dropped 900 feet mid-air. The flight landed safely in Vienna. < Back Restaurant Service Charges made illegal in India 18 Feb 2026 The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) termed it an unfair trade practice as per the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Acting on verified consumer complaints, the CCPA penalised 27 establishments, ordered refunds, and directed restaurants to modify billing systems to prevent automatic addition of service charges. This enforcement is supported by a March 2025 Delhi High Court ruling that backed the CCPA’s 2022 guidelines and affirmed the authority’s statutory power to enforce them. It confirms that service charges must be voluntary and cannot be added by default, disguised under alternative names, or used to levy GST. Investigations revealed systematic violations, including cases at Café Blue Bottle in Patna and Bora Bora in Mumbai, where 10% charges were added automatically. Penalties ranged from ₹30,000 to ₹50,000. The CCPA emphasised zero tolerance going forward, reiterating that consumer choice and billing transparency are legally non-negotiable. < Back e₹ to solve cross border transaction issues 26 Apr 2025 RBI Deputy Governor T Rabi Sankar talked about CBDC during Bharat Inclusion Summit 2.0 in Bengaluru. Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) is an RBI initiative launched in December 2022, built using blockchain technology. Under the pilot phase, e₹ has expanded from 4 to 16 banks, including the State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. In December 2024, the Indian government submitted an update to the Lok Sabha on the progress of Wholesale CBDC (e₹-W) and Retail (e₹-R). They are testing privacy and anonymity features in retail CBDC transactions. The Bahamas was the first one to launch its CBDC, called the Sand Dollar, in October 2020. By now, several countries have followed suit. The IMF introduced a CBDC Virtual Handbook, outlining best practices for policymakers worldwide. The European Central Bank is in the preparation phase for the Digital Euro, which will permit offline transactions and real-time settlements. < Back Startups turn to Digilocker verification after govt crackdown 17 Jul 2025 Startups previously relied on Aadhaar authentication apps to verify gig workers, but this changed in January. Companies in e-commerce, ride-hailing, and food delivery often struggle to verify gig workers, such as delivery personnel, using Aadhaar-based eKYC. In January, the government mandated ministry approval for accessing the government database for Aadhaar authentication. After approval, companies could access the government’s Aadhaar database via Protean eGov Technologies. Protean eGov processes around 12 lakh eKYC transactions daily. It handled 56 crore verifications in FY2025 alone. In June, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) and UIDAI targeted the unauthorised use of Aadhaar onboarding tools and blocked verification websites like Surepass, Digitap, and Zoop. The move also impacted startups and companies in the fintech and lending sectors. They turned to Digilocker-based Aadhaar verification tools for governmental compliance. Verification platforms like Idfy are assisting e-commerce companies with legal methods of validation and onboarding.
