< Back Indian IAF Pilot lands SpaceX Dragon on Int’l Space Station 26 Jun 2025 It has been 41 years since an Indian was part of a spaceflight program. Today, Shubhanshu Shukla, the Indian Air Force Group Captain, became the first Indian to visit NASA’s orbiting lab on the International Space Station. He piloted SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft carrying four crew members, including himself. NASA’s mission involved private firms SpaceX and Axiom Space. The craft took off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, on June 25th at 12:01 pm IST and landed on June 26th around 4:30 pm IST. Born in 1985 in Lucknow, Shukla joined the Indian Air Force in 2006. He’s flown over 2,000 flight hours and was selected as a member of a team of four for India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission. Besides Shukla, Commander Peggy Whitson from the US, Slawosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary are part of the team. They are conducting many India-sponsored experiments for long-duration missions, including microalgae cultivation, human health in space, and plant biology. < Back Uber to start bus shuttle services in Delhi 20 May 2024 It received the license under the Delhi government’s Premium Bus Scheme, an app-based bus aggregator scheme launched in November 2022 to encourage the upper middle class to choose public transport. Uber became the first aggregator to receive a license from the Delhi transport authority under the Premium Bus Scheme. The company can run shuttle bus services in the national capital region. The app allows users to book seats in the bus up to seven days in advance and track live location, bus route, and expected arrival time. The company ran a pilot programme for Uber Shuttle last year in Delhi-NCR and has been operating in Kolkata since 2023 under an MoU with the West Bengal government. Uber Shuttle will connect Delhi’s commercial and residential areas. Operated by local fleet associates, these buses will seat 19-50 people. India is the second country after Egypt, where Uber launched the bus shuttle service. The Premium Bus Scheme allows private operators to operate AC luxury buses with seating for at least nine people. < Back Eight US newspapers sue OpenAI, Microsoft over illegal content usage 1 May 2024 They accused the two companies of illegally using news articles to power their AI chatbots. Alden Global Capital’s eight newspapers in the US sued OpenAI and Microsoft over allegations that the two companies illegally used their content to fuel their AI chatbots. The dailies The New York Daily News, The Denver Post, The Chicago Tribune, The San Jose Mercury News, The Orlando Sentinel, The Sun Sentinel of Florida, The St. Paul Pioneer Press, and The Orange County Register filed the case in the Federal Court of the US Southern District of New York. The complaint mentions Microsoft and OpenAI used millions of copyrighted news articles without seeking permission from the newspapers to train their AI tools ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. The chatbots often display text from subscription-only articles without a backlink to the source. The publications are seeking a jury trial and fair compensation for using their news articles. < Back Amazon launches Kuiper internet satellites, Starlink enters India 8 May 2025 Amazon began Project Kuiper on April 28th with the launch of the first 27 satellites. After a year’s delay, Amazon launched Project Kuiper last week. They were sent into low Earth orbit via an Atlas V rocket from Florida. United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin, developed the rocket. Amazon is investing $10 billion in providing internet services, particularly to areas with limited connectivity, competing with Starlink, T-Mobile, and AT&T. It launched two prototypes in 2023, which were de-orbited in 2024. It will deploy 3,236 satellites overall and begin offering services by the end of 2025. Amazon has a mid-2026 deadline set by the US Federal Communications Commission to launch 1,618 satellites. India’s Department of Telecommunications issued Starlink a Letter of Intent on May 7 for a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite license for satellite-based broadband. Starlink needs to accept the terms, pay the fee, secure approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre and await spectrum allocation. < Back Tata JLR, China’s Chery to develop EVs in China 25 Jun 2024 Tata Motor’s subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chinese Chery Automobile Company have formed a 50:50 joint venture, Chery-Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR). Chery Jaguar Land Rover will manufacture petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles in China. To date, it has produced five different models: the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque L, Jaguar E-PACE, Jaguar XFL, and Jaguar XEL. JLR is ready to license the Freelander brand to CJLR. This brand was produced between 1997 and 2015 and was succeeded by Discovery Sport in 2016. The new model developed by CJLR will be a mainstream electric vehicle (EV) for the Chinese market, slated for global export later. JLR has also announced the production of Range Rover in India. The brand was previously manufactured in the UK. Making it in India is expected to reduce the waiting period and bring the cost down by 18 to 22 per cent. As Chinese brands BYD and NIO entered India, Tata partnered with Chery to comply with the laws regarding foreign companies doing business in China. Previous Next

< Back Epic Games wins antitrust lawsuit against Google in the US 15 Dec 2023 The jury agreed with the video game maker, calling out Google’s Play Store practices monopolistic. On Tuesday, San Francisco-based video games maker and software developer Epic Games won a lawsuit against Google in the US. The gaming startup claimed that Google’s 30% commission on Play Store promotes monopoly, affects competition, and reduces innovation. Epic Games alleged that in 2021, Google made a $12 billion operating profit on the Play Store by enforcing dominating policies in the app market. The jury agreed with the startup, thus making it a momentous win against the digital giant. However, Google plans to challenge Epic Games in the US Federal Court. The win has encouraged startups worldwide and in India to fight against the hefty commission they call the ‘Google Tax’. The Competition Commission of India identified these issues in October 2020. It fined Google ₹936 crore for Competition Act violation, including making its in-house payment and billing system mandatory for paid apps and within-app purchases on the Play Store. Previous Next

< Back Royal Enfield EV to launch in the first quarter of 2026 3 Jun 2025 The electric bike has been showcased many times, even at EICMA, the world’s biggest motorcycle trade show held every year in Milan. Flying Flea C6, Royal Enfield’s new EV, was set up for an exclusive event at Officine del Volo, Milan, where a select few influencers and media got a private preview. This built anticipation before the bike’s public debut at EICMA. The Flying Flea C6 is positioned as a retro-futuristic electric bike, less than 110 kg, with a forged aluminium frame, a round touchscreen display, a Snapdragon processor to enable over-the-air updates, and customisable ride modes. Royal Enfield began developing it two years ago as a part of its Rebalance strategy, to balance electric and fossil-fuel-based products. Flying Flea was originally a 59 kg WWII motorcycle, designed to be air-dropped via parachute to help the British army cross enemy lines and fight Nazis during the Normandy landings in 1940. < Back Delayed sweeping, greening add to NCR pollution 20 Nov 2024 In the absence of appropriate greening of pavements and road cleaning, dust adds to the pollution from stubble burning. Besides stubble burning, several geographical and meteorological factors contribute to NCR’s pollution season. Preventing these is possible only by preponing the paddy harvest season as done before 2009. To conserve groundwater by delaying paddy harvest, the Punjab and Haryana Preservation of Subsoil Water Act, 2009, postponed the harvest season to October-November from June-October. With this change, the sowing season aligned with the monsoons, thus helping save water but triggering stubble burning in the absence of rains. Towards dust control, by July, 85 Mechanical Road Sweeping Machines (MRSMs) were deployed in Delhi against the target of 206 for 2024. UP, Haryana, and Rajasthan received most of their targeted MRSMs. By July end, 199 km of centre verges remained ungreened and 278 km of roadsides left unpaved. Road dust contributes 40% of PM10 and 20% of PM2.5. EV charging infrastructure targets remained unachieved, with 3,100 stations ready against a target of 4,793. Previous Next

< Back 3 Indian states ban raw egg mayonnaise 12 May 2025 Kerala banned it in 2023, Telangana in November 2024, and Tamil Nadu in April 2025. Mayonnaise made from raw eggs contains egg yolk, vinegar, vegetable oil, and seasonings. Tamil Nadu has become the third state to ban the production, storage, distribution, and sale of mayonnaise for a year, effective April 8, 2025. Tamil Nadu’s Food Safety and Drug Administration has termed it a ‘high risk’ food due to its potential to cause food poisoning from Salmonella bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia Coli, and Listeria monocytogenes). Food poisoning symptoms would include diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever. These bacteria thrive in warmer temperatures, so mayonnaise can pose higher safety risks when improperly cooked or stored. Vegan and pasteurised egg mayonnaise undergo heat treatment that kills the harmful bacteria. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have introduced street food hygiene standards and imposed limits on synthetic food colours in sweets and beverages.
