- ChatGPT’s Sora: The text-to-video conversion AI tool | Salestors.com
< Back ChatGPT’s Sora: The text-to-video conversion AI tool 26 Feb 2024 Sora uses your texts to understand your video requirements. It can create videos of varying lengths, sizes, and shapes. OpenAI launched a text-to-video generator, Sora, in early February. It uses a diffusion model to break down your text input and create a video. It can generate complex scenes with multiple characters, varied backgrounds, and motions. The tool shows an advanced understanding of how things exist naturally and their physical behaviour. It can also understand human language and create characters showing specified emotions. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, invited several social media professionals to try out the new app, and the responses were ecstatic. The videos seemed real-life-like. But this also raised several issues about the societal implications of this technology. Currently, Sora is mainly available for Red Teamers, the cybersecurity professionals who act as enemies to assess the associated risks. Many designers, filmmakers, and visual artists are also given access to try out Sora. Meta and Google are working on similar tools. Previous Next
- New law to impact Indian firms offering AI products to the European Union | Salestors.com
< Back New law to impact Indian firms offering AI products to the European Union 31 May 2024 Last week, the Council of the European Union approved the world’s first law regulating AI development, the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act. The EU’s new AI Act, expected to come into effect by June end, will raise compliance expectations and associated costs for Indian firms selling AI systems in Europe. Companies will have six months to conduct a risk assessment to ascertain the category of their AI systems and prepare for compliance. While the generic AI applications will get a year to comply, the high-risk systems must fully comply within three years. The Act will ban any AI applications posing unacceptable threats within six months of implementation. Indian SMEs offering AI products to the EU market at reasonable rates are worried about losing their competitive edge. Becoming and staying compliant will demand excessive costs and administrative resources. Non-compliance can attract penalties of up to €1,50,00,000 or 3% of the turnover. The new Indian government may pass the Digital India Act, replacing the twenty-five-year-old IT Act. It may also regulate AI. Previous Next

- Supreme Court dismissed PIL against E20 petrol | Salestors.com
< Back Supreme Court dismissed PIL against E20 petrol 1 Sept 2025 The petitioner cited a 2021 NITI Aayog report that raised concerns about older vehicles being non-compliant with E20. Advocate Akshay Malhotra had filed a petition with the Supreme Court citing concerns about ethanol-based petrol E20. He sought an option of ethanol-free petrol for vehicles manufactured before April 2023. Vehicles made after April 2023 are compliant with E20 petrol. The matter was presented before the bench headed by the Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, who dismissed the petition. Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani called the petitioner a ‘name lender’ and pointed out the huge lobby behind the petition. He highlighted how the E20 fuel policy benefits sugarcane farmers and helps save foreign exchange. E20 petrol policy sparked concerns about the expected 6% reduction in fuel efficiency. The Road Transport and Petroleum Ministries have dismissed the rumours. The Petroleum Ministry referred to a NITI Aayog study on Ethanol, citing that E20 promises better acceleration and ride quality. Check out my new book, THE BLACK FLAMES , on Amazon Kindle. - Foreign companies prepare for a lawsuit against GST evasion notices | Salestors.com
< Back Foreign companies prepare for a lawsuit against GST evasion notices 23 Sept 2024 Online Information and Database Access or Retrieval (OIDAR) covers online services with or without a physical user interface and is subject to an 18% tax slab. OIDAR services were GST-exempt until an amendment took effect in October 2023, which made foreign companies liable to pay the tax. The revised law mandated that companies were liable to pay GST irrespective of the level of human intervention in rendering their digital services. As per the law, foreign organisations must register in India and pay GST to offer their services to Indians. The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) issued tax evasion notices for the period between 2017 and 2023 to 70 foreign companies for providing OIDAR services in India. These companies include Meta, Netflix, Spotify, and Google across subscription-based services, advertising, online gaming, and edtech. The companies argue that their services involve human intervention and can be delivered offline, which was GST-exempt before the amendment. Online training and exam platforms say their services are not covered under OIDAR. They will soon file the case in the high court. Previous Next

- Why Unified Code for Pharma Marketing Practices is difficult to implement | Salestors.com
< Back Why Unified Code for Pharma Marketing Practices is difficult to implement 19 Mar 2024 The government implemented on March 12th a new code, UCPMP, to curb unethical practices in the pharma industry. The Unified Code for Pharma Marketing Practices (UCPMP) prohibits pharmaceutical companies from bribing doctors with paid foreign trips and hospitality stays, personal gifts for them and family members, monetary gifts for doctors, agents or distributors, or any cash payments or grants for doctors and their family members. It mandates that individual companies disclose any sponsorships for conferences and medical courses. However, there is no portal setup to report this. Industry experts believe this Code will be less effective since it is non-statutory and not enforced by a regulatory authority. It is not a law, and players in the Indian pharmaceutical industry will easily beat around it to incentivise medical professionals. Pharma associations need to form an ethics committee and create a portal linked to the pharma department, which will house an independent panel to audit such expenses. A code breach can lead to suspension of the entity from the association. Previous Next
