< Back Air India introduces Wi-Fi on domestic, int’l flights 6 Jan 2025 From January 1st, 2025, Air India introduced the service on all flights operated by Airbus A350, a few Airbus A321neo, and Boeing 787-9. On January 1st, Air India became the first Indian carrier to introduce Wi-Fi onboard domestic and international routes. The service will be available to all passengers free of cost during the introductory period. The airline hasn’t yet specified till when the complementary period will last. Users can use Wi-Fi on Android and iOS smartphones, laptops, and tablets and connect multiple devices above an altitude of 10,000 feet. To use Wi-Fi, users can select the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network from Wi-Fi settings. On being directed to the Air India portal on the browser, enter the PNR and last name to access complimentary internet service. The national carrier conducted a pilot programme on international routes to New York, Singapore, London, and Paris. In-flight Wi-Fi connectivity depends on satellite systems, routes, government regulations, and bandwidth availability. However, Air India intends to gradually extend the services to more aircraft in its fleet. Previous Next

Fuelled by high demand, Chinese mobile phones are flooding the Indian market and securing top spots. In the first quarter of FY2025, Xiaomi and Vivo held the first and second positions, each with an 18% market share, followed by the Korean brand Samsung, with a 17% share. More Chinese brands, Realme and Oppo, rank fourth and fifth in India with a 12% and an 11% share. The overall market share of Chinese smartphone brands in India spiked to over 75% from 61% in the July-September quarter last year. The June 2024 quarter saw a 1% increase in mobile shipments, with 36.4 million unit sales. The market research firm Canalys says demand for mobile phones dropped in the July-September quarter due to elections, an extreme heatwave across the country, and low seasonal demand. Touted Asia’s largest airport, Noida International Airport in Jewar, will begin testing aircraft landing from November 30th. The trials initially scheduled for November 15th were delayed as the airport did not get permission from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). As part of the testing, three flights each of IndiGo and Akasa Air will land at the airport daily. After completing the testing phase, DGCA will issue the aerodrome license, thus preparing the airport for commercial operations. The official opening for commercial operations is set for April 25th, 2025. Flight bookings will begin in January 2025, three months before the inaugural flight. The authorities have partnered with Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa and the first flights will depart for Dubai and Singapore. Developed by Yamuna International Airport, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, Switzerland, this airport has six runways, twice as many as Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. It will cost up to 75% less than WhatsApp Business but twice the traditional SMS. Competing with WhatsApp Business, Google partnered with Vodafone Idea to launch a Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging system in India. RCS is an advanced messaging protocol that enhances the features of an SMS and MMS. GSM Association, the non-profit organization representing global mobile network operators, launched it in 2008. RCS offers WhatsApp-like features, including media sharing, group chats, end-to-end encryption, and read receipts. It has no character limit, displays real-time typing indicators to know when someone is typing, and works on mobile and Wi-Fi networks. It is incompatible with the traditional feature phones used by 300 million Indians. Apple will launch its RCS service via a software update by this year's end. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio plan to launch the service soon. Telcom companies have long sought regulatory intervention against WhatsApp, citing the risk of fraud, cybersecurity, and revenue loss for the industry and national exchequer worth ₹3,000 crore. Expanding their scope of quick commerce, Blinkit is set to launch ambulance services in select areas of Gurugram, India. It deployed five ambulances in the test phase on Thursday, January 2nd. Users will soon be able to book a Basic Life Support (BLS) service through the Blinkit app. The ambulances will have a paramedic, a trained driver, and an assistant. It will not offer services for neonatal care or ventilators. It will be equipped with AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator), oxygen cylinders, suction machines, monitors, stretchers, emergency medicines, including injections. The q-commerce startup plans to introduce the service in other major cities in India within the next two years. A few users highlighted the probable issue of users being asked to pay surge prices in times of high demand. Till December 2023, India had 17,495 BLS and 3,441 Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances. After an 18-month-long legal battle, the Burmans, Dabur’s owners, acquired Religare, the Delhi-based financial services company. They infused ₹2,116 crore for an additional 26% stake and now own over 50%. Religare’s former promoters, Malvinder and Shivinder Mohan Singh (Ranbaxy), were arrested in 2019 for defrauding Religare Finvest, REL’s main lending business, for approximately ₹2,400 crore. Rashmi Saluja was appointed CEO-Chairperson in 2019. The company’s management had been in conflict with the Burmans ever since. She faced charges of financial irregularities and attempts to thwart the Burman acquisition. She was ousted on February 7th, 2025, after failing to secure a reappointment by shareholders. After seven consecutive profitable quarters since March 2023, Religare reported a ₹63 crore loss in the December 2024 quarter. In September 2023, the Burmans increased their ownership in Religare from 20% to 25% and offered to buy an additional 26% from the public by pumping in $255 million. WeWork Global filed for bankruptcy in the US while its Indian arm reported a revenue of ₹400 crore in Q1 FY2024, 40% higher over the same period last year. The Indian arm followed the real estate business model, while its American parent portrayed itself as a tech brand with around five times higher valuations. As a tech business, WeWork Global had to open spaces where they couldn’t generate enough revenue. There were few buyers for their ₹8,000 per seat price tag. Meanwhile, WeWork India partnered with Begaluru-based Embassy Group, which owns almost 25% of its workspaces and 73% of WeWork India. Embassy, in turn, tied up with Prestige and DLF Groups to expand in North India. WeWork India approached brands that could afford its premium prices instead of freelancers, bootstrapped startups, and small businesses. Several AI-driven startups often petitioned the government to increase compute capacity, which refers to the software and hardware available to support AI workloads and applications. The new cluster will manifest as a Public-Private Partnership and the capacity offered to startups as a service. The proposal for the 25,000 GPU cluster will be finalised by year end. Global supercomputers run on 30,000 GPUs, while India’s supercomputer, Airawat, installed in the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Pune, has 640 GPUs.
