Besides, US, Canadian, and European visas are challenging to obtain, which leaves only South Asia as an option for Indians. Countries with easy and on-arrival visas are experiencing full flights. Following the DGCA directive to add capacity and prevent rate hikes, Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet added more than 1,700 flights. This year, however, flights aren’t sold out; hotels are. < Back UAE to build world’s biggest AI campus outside of the US 19 May 2025 As a part of the US-UAE agreement signed during President Trump’s visit, the UAE will build the largest AI campus in the world. Government-backed firm G42 will build an AI campus in Abu Dhabi, with support from several American companies, like OpenAI. The campus will span 10 square miles with a 5-gigawatt power capacity that can support up to 2.5 million Nvidia B200 chips. The agreement will allow the UAE to import 500,000 of Nvidia’s most advanced chips, which will be used to power the AI campus. The agreement opens the doors for Microsoft and Oracle to establish data centres in the UAE. G42 had several investments in Chinese companies, including ByteDance (the parent company of TikTok) and Huawei. After the US expressed concerns, G42 divested from all. A 100% subsidiary of Kaynes Technology India, Kaynes Semicon has opened its chip design centre in Oman, in collaboration with and fully funded by the Omani government. < Back Indian fintech players applying for int'l payment licenses 27 Mar 2024 Razorpay, Cashfree and new fintech providers like Skydo and PayGlocal among those applying for RBI's Payment Aggregator-Cross Border (PACB) license. In 2023, Indian fintech startups processed $10 billion worth of transactions of the $250 billion goods and services exports registered by small and medium sized businesses. These financial services providers were earlier given an online payment gateway service provider license, identifying them as technology providers to Indian banks. Indian fintechs expect a margin of 2.5-4% per international card transaction compared to 1% domestically. Average ticket size for B2B global transactions is estimated to be $5,000. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced the PA-CB license in October 2023 to regulate emerging international payments businesses. Razorpay recently shifted its base from Singapore to India. It is now building an international payments gateway and will then graduate to large ticket vendor payments for account based transactions. Cashfree will initially focus on B2C payments only. < Back US Department of Justice sues Apple for monopolising market 22 Mar 2024 The Department of Justice (DOJ) and 15 states sued the phone maker for creating a monopoly in the US smartphone market. The DOJ accused Apple of charging heavily, making more profit than any other smartphone maker, raising prices, and hurting smaller businesses. It levies fees on business partners like software developers and credit card companies in a masked manner to hike its own profits. With this antitrust lawsuit, Apple joined the tech giants, like Google, Meta, and Amazon, who faced similar battles. Apple charges its users a premium for technology products and controls how they work with its devices. It has also been charged with blocking or controlling competing technologies, like super apps, messaging apps, digital wallets, smartwatches, and some cloud-streaming gaming apps. The DOJ aims to force the company to give users more freedom in choosing how apps work with Apple devices. The recently introduced Digital Markets Act in Europe deeply affected the Apple App Store. < Back Pakistan losing above $760k daily due to airspace closure 28 Apr 2025 In 2019, Pakistan closed its airspace for Indian carriers after the Pulwama attack, which cost it USD 760,000 daily. Airlines pay an overflight fee to countries for using their airspace. A Boeing 737 crossing Pakistani airspace pays USD 580 in overflight fees; larger aircraft pay more. Today, around 350 international flights cross its airspace daily. Overflight charges comprise around 20% of their annual civil aviation revenue. After the Pulwama attack, closing its airspace cost the Pakistani Civil Aviation Authority and Pakistan International Airlines around USD100 million in a few months. This included USD232,000 lost in daily overflight revenue. Its total aviation revenue is expected to be over USD6 billion by 2029, compared to India’s estimated USD30 billion aviation revenue in 2025. 60% of the annual revenue comes from the east-to-west air corridor spanning 10,000 km, which connects Asia with the Middle East and Europe. < Back Microsoft introduces agentic AI model Magma 21 Feb 2025 It combines language and visual processing to control software and robotic systems. Microsoft’s Magma can process multimodal data like texts, images, and videos and act on it. That’s irrespective of whether it is navigating a user interface, like clicking buttons and filling forms or manipulating physical objects, like commanding a robot to pick up things and move objects. It has been developed by researchers from Microsoft, the University of Maryland, KAIST, the University of Washington, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Microsoft’s ChatGPT for Robotics and Google’s RT-2 and PALM-E are AI-based robotics models that use large language models (LLMs) as interfaces and require separate models for perception and control. Magma integrates both abilities into a single base model. Microsoft is positioning it as agentic AI that can formulate plans and act on them rather than just answer questions. OpenAI’s Operator and Google’s Gemini 2.0 are endeavours towards agentic AI. Microsoft also launched Muse, a videogame AI model that generates visuals and actions. < Back Japan Air flight plummets nearly 26,000 feet midair 2 Jul 2025 The Boeing 737-800 Dreamliner fell from 36,000 feet to almost 10,000 feet due to a sudden cabin pressure failure. On June 30th, 6:53 p.m. local time, Japan Airlines flight JL8696 experienced a cabin pressure failure, causing it to fall nearly 25,000 feet in under 10 minutes. The plane was flying under a code-share agreement between Japan Airlines and its low-cost subsidiary, Spring Japan, from Shanghai Pudong to Tokyo’s Narita. It was carrying 191 passengers. One passenger heard a “muffled boom”, after which oxygen masks were automatically deployed, and the flight attendants panicked. The plane made an emergency, safe landing at Kansai Airport, Osaka, at 8:50 pm local time. Japan Airlines offered ¥15,000 (around $104) and overnight accommodation as compensation. Air India Boeing 777 flight from Delhi to Vienna on June 14th faced a similar malfunction, after which the plane dropped 900 feet mid-air. The flight landed safely in Vienna. < Back JSW Steel-JFE to acquire Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel for ₹4,051.4 crore 21 Oct 2024 JSW Steel has a 50:50 joint venture with Japan’s JFE Steel Corp that will acquire a 100% stake in Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel India (TKES). The JSW Steel – JFE joint venture is set to fully acquire Thyssenkrupp Electric Steel, including licensing or transferring its associated technology to enhance its portfolio of value-added steel products. TKES’s Nashik facility makes grain-oriented electrical sheets (GOES), which are used to manufacture energy-efficient transformers and bigger, high-performance generators. Jsquare Electrical Steel Nashik, the JSW-JFE joint venture, will execute the transaction. It expects to achieve immediate market access with this acquisition. The acquisition will enable the JSW-JFE joint venture to make GOES in India for domestic and global customers. Presently, India imports the majority of the GOES from Japan, Russia, and China. ArcelorMittal, POSCO, and Baosteel are the biggest global manufacturers of GOES. The market for GOES is valued at around $13 billion worldwide, projected to reach $20 billion by 2032. < Back EU to hike duties on Chinese EVs by up to 38.1% from July 13 Jun 2024 This comes a month after the US announced its plans to quadruple tariff on Chinese EVs to 100%. To combat excessive subsidies, the European Commission will increase tariffs on electric vehicles from 17.4% for BYD to 38.1% for SAIC, besides the regular 10% duty levied on cars. So, the overall duty on vehicles would be nearly 50%. European automakers have been competing with their Chinese counterparts, whose market share has risen from below 1% in 2019 to over 8%. Chinese EVs are expected to cover 15% of the European market by 2025. Brands like BMW will incur additional duties for EVs made in China and sold in Europe. The Chinese government issued disapproving statements after the announcement. However, the Chinese Passenger Car Association said the hike is within their expectations and will not impact most firms in China. Chinese car exports had surged by over 50% in 2023. Besides, European regulators will consider loans granted by Chinese governmental banks as subsidies subject to additional tariffs. Previous Next

Also, digital gold sales saw a year-on-year increase of 60%. Indians are turning to lab-grown diamonds (LGDs), which are cheaper than natural diamonds. As per Limelight Diamonds, the largest LGD brand in the country, their sales grew by 120% this year compared to Diwali 2022. One carat solitaire LGD rings cost between ₹80,000 and ₹1 lakh, down from ₹2 lakh a year ago and far lower compared to a one carat natural diamond ring that costs around ₹5 lakh. LGD sales have also increased in Tier 2 cities, where brands plan to expand. The number of LGD retailers in India has gone up to 4,000 from just a few last year. PM Modi gifted Greenlab’s 7.5 carat LGD to US First Lady, Jill Biden, on his June visit. Besides, older millennials and young parents are investing around ₹13,000 on average for existing customers and ₹17,500 for new customers in digital gold via payment and banking platforms. La mission est surnommée « Ghost Riders in the Sky ».
