Outgoing President Joe Biden signed a law in April 2024 mandating ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to divest its American assets to a non-Chinese buyer by January 19th, 2025, or face a ban on the app’s downloads on Android and Apple stores. To comply with the law, TikTok announced its plan to shut down its US app on Sunday. However, President-elect Donald Trump is contemplating an executive order to suspend enforcing this law by 60 to 90 days. His term begins on January 20th. Trump’s National Security Advisor designate, Mike Waltz, said that the administration is searching for a way to let TikTok operate in the US while protecting user data. TikTok’s CEO has also been invited to attend the President-elect’s inauguration and sit in a position of honour on the dais. Susan gave Larry Page and Sergey Brin space in her garage, which became Google’s first office in 1998. She became one of the first 16 employees to join Google in 1999. She was the first marketing employee of Google and held charge when the company branched out to Google Video in 2005 and bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006. She was among the pioneers behind digital advertising and nurtured Google’s advertising prowess. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Troper, a Director at Google, and four children. On December 30th, Adani Enterprises announced its decision to sell the entire 43.94% stake in Adani Wilmar Limited. It sold 31.06% to Singapore-based Wilmar International and plans to sell the remaining ~13% in the open stock market for a total of $2 billion. Adani’s exit from Adani Wilmar, its FMCG business, was long expected. Adani Wilmar makes cooking oil, wheat flour, and other edibles under the ‘Fortune’ brand. The edible oil share declined steadily due to rising import costs and weak demand, but Adani retained market leadership at 20%. The edible oil segment contributes 80% to Adani Wilmar's revenue share but offers lower profitability, with a margin of just 0.33% in FY2024. This is the biggest deal after Adani was indicted in the US on bribery charges in November. Adar Poonawalla’s entertainment business, Serene Productions, signed a binding agreement to become a co-owner of Dharma Productions and Dharmatic Entertainment for ₹1,000 crore. Adar Poonawalla, CEO, Serum Institute of India, beat JioCinema and Saregama to become a Dharma co-owner. The other two deals did not go through due to differences over Dharma’s valuation. Serene Productions valued Dharma at ₹2,000 crores. This move is expected to encourage more corporate investments and transparency in the film industry. Karan Johar will continue as the Executive Chairman and Apoorva Mehta as the CEO. The deal will provide a much-needed capital influx and reputed investors for Dharma, which hasn’t delivered a blockbuster hit in some time. It launched Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital content production vertical, in 2018, to produce series and movies. Ten international airlines, including Lufthansa, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Oman Air, and British Airways, operating in India received show-cause notices from DGGI demanding an explanation on the unpaid GST worth ₹10,000 crores for services imported from their headquarters. International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global trade body governing the movement of airlines worldwide, disagreed with DGGI’s claim that all airline headquarters must pay GST on the expenses incurred for rendering services like crew, rentals, and aircraft maintenance. It highlighted that Indian carriers flying abroad do not face such taxes. The notice covers the period from July 2017, when GST was introduced, to March 2024. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), issued a circular on June 26th, 2024, clarifying the applicability of GST on services provided by international airlines. Following its ongoing war with Israel, Iran passed the bill that suspends any cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and withdraws from the NPT. This bill restricts the IAEA’s access to Iranian nuclear facilities for inspection. This move draws a curtain on international visibility into Iran’s nuclear activities. It could set a precedent for the others and trigger several geopolitical reactions, like sanctions from the US or the EU. Iran’s atomic isolation could make future negotiations challenging. At the same time, Iran has threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, with its Parliament approving the measure. The final decision to physically close it rests with the Iranian Supreme National Security Council. This Strait allows 20% of the world’s oil and liquified natural gas to pass. An independent panel of seven AI and governance specialists assessed the safety practices of these six AI companies across six parameters – Risk Assessment, Current Harms, Safety Frameworks, Existential Safety Strategy, Governance and Accountability, and Transparency and Communication. Findings revealed that only a few companies have established adequate safety frameworks and done risk assessments. All flagship models are vulnerable to attacks, and all artificial general intelligence (AGI) models are far from safe or under human control. Companies often cut corners on safety parameters to succumb to profiteering. FLI was founded by MIT cosmologist Max Tegmark, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, and others in March 2014. For Canada and Mexico, the Fentanyl and non-USMCA (US- Mexico- Canada Trade Agreement) tariffs remain intact at 25%.
