  • India to fund Maldives’ largest water and sanitation project in 28 islands | Salestors.com

< Back India to fund Maldives’ largest water and sanitation project in 28 islands 13 Aug 2024 The External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar inaugurated the water and sanitation project worth ₹923 crore and introduced UPI there. S Jaishankar signed many Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and virtually inaugurated six High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in the areas of mental health, speech therapy, special education, and street lighting. The MoUs focused on capacity building for 1,000 more civil servants in India and launching the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the Maldives. With Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Foreign Minister Fathulla Jameel, S Jaishankar inaugurated the water project in 28 islands backed by India’s Line of Credit. India’s relations with Maldives strained after the Muizzu government came in September 2023, which was inclined towards strengthening their relations with China over India. Derogatory remarks against Narendra Modi, pushing withdrawal of Indian military personnel from Maldives, and a social media war impacted the relations further. In the July 2024 budget, India reduced the grants to Maldives to ₹400 crore, which is ₹200 crore less than announced in February. Previous Next

  • A 34-year low Yen strengthening India’s imports from Japan | Salestors.com

< Back A 34-year low Yen strengthening India’s imports from Japan 30 Jul 2024 When the Bank of Japan increased its interest rate from negative to 0-0.1% in April 2024, the Yen depreciated to a 34-year low, thus making imports cheaper for India. Since 2003, India has been the biggest recipient of Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans. Japan has funded several infrastructure projects, like the Delhi metro and India’s first bullet train, by giving loans at meagre rates of 0.1 to 1.8%. Japan authorised the 50-year loan for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train at a 0.1% interest. A declining Yen catapulted Indian imports, especially those from the automotive industry. Between FY2023 and FY2024, India’s imports from Japan increased by approximately USD 1.2 billion, while exports to Japan reduced by USD 0.31 billion. With negligible domestic opportunities, Japan seeks large-scale infrastructure projects abroad. It lends loans at dirt-cheap rates on the condition that India imports technology, machinery, and metals from Japan. Compared to the Bank of Japan’s negative interest rates, 0.1-1.8% rates become profitable for Japanese lenders. Japanese imports from India include marine products and apparel, which are not locally produced in that country. Previous Next

  • India-West Asia-EU Corridor to make travel 40% faster | Salestors.com

< Back India-West Asia-EU Corridor to make travel 40% faster Ishita Nigam 12 Sept 2023 The corridor will connect India's West Coast to the Middle East via shipping lines, pass through UAE, Saudi, Jordan, and Israel via a railway line, and enter the Mediterranean via France, Germany, and Italy. Leaders from India, the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, Africa and the EU unveiled a Memorandum of Understanding to build a trade corridor connecting Asia, Africa and Europe. The new passage will provide neutral trade opportunities for manufacturing, food security and supply chain logistics. It will have two sections: the East Corridor connecting India to the Gulf and the Northern Corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe. This challenges the decade-old Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that India has always opposed. The BRI acted as China’s tool to dominate developing nations by creating a debt trap and strategic issues. Many countries have started opposing the BRI, including Italy, that had joined the Chinese project in 2019. It is expected to reduce shipping time and expenses, fuel consumption, and make commerce between India and the Mediterranean more sustainable, faster, and cheaper. Previous Next

  • IndiGo sues Mahindra Electric for trademark infringement | Salestors.com

< Back IndiGo sues Mahindra Electric for trademark infringement 4 Dec 2024 IndiGo accused the EV maker of using ‘6E’ in the latest SUV, Mahindra BE 6e, similar to its own callsign ‘6E’. IndiGo has moved the Delhi High Court against Mahindra Electric. Its new SUV, Mahindra BE 6e, is slated for launch in February. The Registrar of Trademarks accepted Mahindra’s request to register ‘BE 6e’ in the Class 12 vehicle range on November 25th. If it gets registered, Mahindra will be legally allowed to use the ‘6e’ trademark for its motor vehicles and auto components, except two-wheelers and their components. Mahindra Electric Automobile is Mahindra & Mahindra’s (M&M) subsidiary. The company introduced its first pure electric models on November 26th - BE 6e and XEV 9e. It responded to IndiGo’s petition, saying that its car mark fundamentally differs from IndiGo’s standalone ‘6E’, which denotes an airline. The first hearing could be scheduled for December 9th. IndiGo alleges this could cause confusion among its consumers and dilute its brand identity. The carrier uses the mark on all its merchandise and services. Previous Next
