Payments gateway veteran PayU plans to enter Business-to-Business or merchant payments for Indian customers. Once that is set, it will venture into the small ticket supply chain financing space. PayU also acquired a 4.6% stake in the supply chain financing startup Vayana Network. The B2B merchants tie up with multiple payment aggregators, so retention is lower in this segment. PayU intends to use QR codes for offline payments instead of POS terminal transactions. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rejected PayU’s application for the payment aggregator license in January this year. The company had to stop onboarding new merchants after this development. It implemented changes in its holding structure, reapplied for the permit, and now awaits RBI’s final nod. PayU used to generate up to 99% of its revenue from payments till FY2019. < Back Adani’s US indictment impacting long term investor sentiment 27 Nov 2024 A New York court accused the Adani Group of allegedly bribing Indian government officials. A New York Court of Justice announced charges against several top executives of the Adani Group for allegedly offering bribes to Indian government officials in a project involving the development of a major solar power plant. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accused the conglomerate of raising more than $750 million from investors and $175 million from US investors during this scheme. All this while, Azure Power was also trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Accused are Adani Group’s board members Gautam Adani and his son Sagar Adani; Vneet S Jaain, MD and CEO of Adani Green Energy; and Cyril Cabanes from Azure Power. Adani Group recently secured a USD1.36 billion syndicate loan from eight global banks, mentioned in the current indictment. Adani’s long-term investors have expressed concern about investing further in the group. General sentiment may also prevent other Indian corporations from raising debt from global investors. < Back Network18 to merge TV18 and e-Eighteen.com into itself 7 Dec 2023 The media giant received the Board’s nod to create a single listed entity with these two companies. TV18 will be dissolved without winding up. Network18 announced plans to merge its two entities: TV18, which owns a 13.54% stake in Viacom18, and e-Eighteen.com , which owns Moneycontrol.com . Network18 secured the nod from the Board of both companies to consolidate digital media and broadcasting businesses and form a single listed entity under its brand name. The new entity will include TV18’s TV portfolio comprising CNBCTV18.com and 20 new channels in 16 languages, Network18’s digital assets comprising News18.com in 13 languages and Firstpost, and Moneycontrol.com website and app. The move will create India’s largest news media platform with the widest range of languages covered via TV and digital media. It will lead to operational collaborations, cost optimisation, and higher revenue. Earlier, Network18 held a 91.89% stake in e-Eighteen.com , an unlisted entity, and a 51.17% stake in TV18, a listed entity. < Back Home Ministry blocks 805 apps, 3,266 websites 12 Feb 2025 The action was taken by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). During the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Home Affairs on ‘Cyber Security and Cybercrime’, Home Minister Amit Shah announced the actions taken by the I4C.The I4C is the Ministry of Home Affairs initiative to combat cybercrime. I4C blocked 805 apps and 3,266 websites, caught 19 lakh mule accounts and suspended dubious transactions worth over ₹2,038 crore. It plans to deploy AI to identify mule accounts in a coordinated effort with RBI and banks. Cybercriminals use mule accounts to hide swindled money. I4C’s efforts will ensure mule accounts are closed even before becoming operational. 48% of the world’s digital transactions in 2024 happened in India. 95% of Indian villages are digitally connected, and 1 lakh gram panchayats now have Wi-Fi hotspots. In similar news, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry blocked 18 OTT platforms and associated 19 websites, 57 social media handles, and 10 apps for publishing inappropriate and obscene content. < Back Amul set to expand to the US 28 Mar 2024 Branded milk products like Amul Taaza, Amul Shakti, Amul Slim n Trim, and Amul Gold will hit the shelves within a week. Amul partnered with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) in the US for collection and processing as per Amul’s recipe. Meanwhile, it will brand and market its products in New York, New Jersey, Dallas, Chicago, and Washington. Amul will market the products under the name Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, the cooperative society that owns the Amul brand. MMPA is America’s 10th biggest farmer-owned dairy cooperative society and a 108-year-old brand that owns Country Fresh. Amul’s fresh milk will be premium priced, and the company will also supply butter, cheese, and buttermilk to the American market. In the first quarter of its launch, the brand will distribute fresh milk through Indian grocery stores and a few mainstream channels. The man who led India’s milk revolution, Verghese Kurien, set up Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited, which later became Amul. He is also a Michigan State University alumnus. It recently announced its decision to begin manufacturing in the country. They started manufacturing two lip colour products and foundation in India and offered 25% discounts on their imported products during Diwali, ET reported. India’s luxury beauty products market is expected to expand from $800 million in 2023 to nearly $4 billion by 2035. Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez, Anomaly by Priyanka Chopra, Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, Dubai’s Huda Beauty, and H&M Beauty have entered the Indian market in the past year. < Back Agni Prime Missile fired from a rail-based mobile launcher 25 Sept 2025 The missile features a range of up to 2,000 km, advanced communication systems, and independent launch capability. India successfully test-fired the Agni Prime Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile on Wednesday from a train. This puts India among the select group of nations, including Russia, China, and the US, that own such advanced mobile, canisterized missile launchers. The missile can be launched from anywhere on the rail network, offering a short reaction time despite reduced visibility and cross-country mobility. It is a two-stage, solid propellant missile – the sixth in the Agni series. It was being transported via truck and launched via canister until now. It also has nuclear capabilities. Keeping missiles on fixed launchers makes them more vulnerable to strikes. Moving launchers gives them the added advantage. In the 1950s, the US began studying the feasibility of a rail-based launch mode for its Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) but abandoned it in 1961. < Back Susan Wojcicki, ex-CEO of YouTube, dies after a two-year battle with cancer 12 Aug 2024 She was YouTube's CEO from 2014 to 2023 before resigning in February 2023 for family and health reasons. Born in Santa Clara, California, which is now Silicon Valley, Susan studied history at Harvard and worked as a photojournalist in India. She then returned to California to pursue advanced degrees in Economics before joining Intel Corp in a marketing role. Susan gave Larry Page and Sergey Brin space in her garage, which became Google’s first office in 1998. She became one of the first 16 employees to join Google in 1999. She was the first marketing employee of Google and held charge when the company branched out to Google Video in 2005 and bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006. She was among the pioneers behind digital advertising and nurtured Google’s advertising prowess. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Troper, a Director at Google, and four children. < Back Vodafone Idea signs ₹13,500 cr deal with Nokia for equipment 30 Sept 2024 Vodafone Idea (Vi) will buy equipment over three years to expand its 4G network and roll out 5G in nine circles. As per the ₹13,500 crore equipment deal, Nokia will provide Vi with a 5G AirScale Network gear portfolio and upgrade the company’s existing 4G network with multiband radios and baseband equipment to support 5G. Vi recently announced its plans to buy ₹30,000 crore of 4G and 5G network gear from Nokia, Samsung, and Ericsson over the next three years to boost its 4G operations and roll out 5G in major cities in 17 priority circles. As per the contract, Nokia will offer equipment for Vi in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Mumbai, Haryana, UP-East, UP-West, West Bengal, Kolkata and Tamil Nadu/Chennai markets. Ericsson and Nokia will supply 45% of Vi’s 4G and 5G gears, while Samsung will offer 10%. Ericsson may receive nine circles - Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Northeast, and Assam. Samsung may get Bihar and Odisha. < Back All 14 crew rescued after Indian vessel hit off Oman Coast 14 May 2026 An Indian cargo ship, Haji Ali, sank off the coast of Oman after being hit by a suspected drone or missile while sailing from Somalia to Sharjah with livestock. MSV Haji Ali , registered in Gujarat’s Salaya Port, was struck near Limah around 3:30 am by a suspected drone or missile while sailing from Berbera (Somalia) to Sharjah. It triggered a massive explosion and a fire that destabilised it, causing it to sink. All 14 Indian crew members, including a tandel (second-in-command), managed to send a distress signal and evacuate into lifeboats before being rescued by the Oman Coast Guard and taken safely to Deeba port. The incident has intensified concerns over maritime security amid rising tensions linked to the Iran–US conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs called the attack “unacceptable,” stressing that civilian mariners and commercial shipping must not be targeted. No group has assumed responsibility for the attack, and investigations are ongoing. BRICS foreign ministers, including Iran’s, are currently meeting in New Delhi. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced his plans to start manufacturing Pixel 8 smartphones in India in early 2024. These phones are known to carry 5-nanometer Tensor chips and other crucial components designed in India for the world. Moreover, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, has asked Google to start making Tensor chips in India within the next three years. Tensor chips can recognise spoken language more accurately, facilitate proper camera utilisation for better imaging, automatic face recognition, brightness adjustment, and Magic Eraser tool that removes larger distractions by accurately predicting the background. This move will push India closer to becoming a chip manufacturing hub. It’s been two years since the government began facilitating semiconductor manufacturing.
