The Ram Air Turbine (RAT) propeller deploys automatically from the 787 Dreamliner fuselage and functions as a backup generator in case both engines fail, hydraulic system pressures are low, the aircraft’s electric motor pumps stop working, or if cockpit instruments lose power. RAT can generate enough power to enable critical aircraft components to work properly. Investigators believe the RAT was working for AI 171 before it crashed, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. Lone survivor, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh’s testimony about hearing a loud bang followed by the flickering of cabin lights conforms with RAT deployment, as per aviation experts. Meanwhile, DGCA’s investigation revealed no safety concerns in Air India’s 787 fleet. AI 171 had its right engine replaced in March 2025. Singapore Airlines’ SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) is under scrutiny for being involved in Air India’s aircraft maintenance. It is also developing AI’s maintenance facilities in Bengaluru. Two Gurugram-based unicorns are embracing major changes. Although Zomato internally changed its name to Eternal Limited in 2022 after acquiring Blinkit, it received the official shareholder nod now. It will retain its brand name for the food delivery app, but the business entity and the stock exchange ticker will become Eternal. This is Zomato’s second renaming. It started in 2008 as Foodiebay and became Zomato in 2010. Another unicorn, Cars24, launched the ‘New Cars Platform’ to sell new cars on one super app. The platform displays real on-road prices, model comparisons, AI-powered video sneak peeks, home test drives, and financing. It functions as an aggregator for dealers and OEMs to list their models. Currently, for every 10 new cars bought, 13 used cars are sold. < Back Zomato to acquire Paytm’s Insider, movie ticketing biz for ₹2,048 cr 22 Aug 2024 Paytm will also transfer its 280 employees of the ticketing business to Zomato. This move will allow Zomato to expand its entertainment offerings, while Paytm will shift its focus back to fintech. On August 21, the Zomato and One97 Communications (Paytm) boards approved the all-cash deal worth ₹2,048 crore, and the two startup giants informed the stock exchanges. Paytm will first transfer its entertainment ticketing business to its fully owned subsidiaries, Wasteland Entertainment, which runs the Insider platform, and Orbgen Technologies, which operates TicketNew. Paytm’s stake in these companies will then be gradually transferred to Zomato over the next 12 months. Ticketing will continue to be available on the Paytm app during the transition. Zomato has been expanding its offerings beyond dining out and running the food festival Zomaland. It will offer dining and ticketing services via its new ‘District’ app, which is expected to be launched within the next few weeks. Amul, Dabur, Britannia, and Parle plan to reduce sales to organised wholesalers to avoid price wars with traditional distributors. FMCG giants in India plan to reduce their sales to organised wholesalers like Reliance Cash and Carry, Udaan, and Flipkart Wholesale. Conventional kirana stores in India control 80% of the wholesale distribution. Organised retail and wholesale companies own 5% of the market share but have the advantage of scale and can offer more leverage over supplies and prices. Earlier, the FMCG companies hoped to reach the kirana stores through organised wholesalers, but it didn’t happen. Troubled by the threat of deep discounts from established wholesalers, the kirana stores had earlier threatened to stop product supply from these companies. Supplying to traditional distributors costs FMCG companies 13-14% of the sales and nearly half in the case of organised wholesalers. Consumer goods corporations rely on a wholesale network to reach the 12 million kirana stores nationwide. They still plan to leverage organised distributors but limit their participation below 10%. < Back BSNL launches India’s first satellite-to-device service 14 Nov 2024 Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has built this service in association with Californian communications company Viasat. BSNL, the government-owned telecom provider, launched a pioneering direct-to-device satellite service on Wednesday. It will offer uninterrupted network access to even the remotest areas and boost cellular coverage nationwide. This model was showcased at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024. iPhone14 had introduced satellite connectivity, but these services were limited to government and military use in India. BSNL makes the service available to the general public. The service will assist Indians in making emergency calls, sending SoS messages and transacting via UPI in locations with no or limited cellular and Wi-Fi connections. BSNL is yet to announce how its users will be able to access the service and its pricing structure. Satellite spectrum will be allotted to telcos administratively and not via auction. Direct-to-device connectivity allows regular devices like mobile phones, smartwatches, cars, industrial machinery and transport operators to connect with terrestrial and satellite coverage without dedicated hardware. Families of four victims who lost their lives in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad sued Honeywell and Boeing in the Delaware Superior Court, US, where the two companies are incorporated. Boeing is the aircraft manufacturer, and Honeywell supplies the fuel cutoff switches. The complaint lodged on Tuesday accused the two companies of failing to address a known safety hazard. The locking mechanism on the switch in the 787-8 Dreamliner was prone to auto-cutoff or missing altogether. It is placed directly behind the thrust levers, which could lead to accidental shut-off, thus disrupting the fuel supply and thrust during take-off. The families allege Boeing and Honeywell knew about the hazard owing to a 2018 advisory issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about disengaged locking mechanisms on some Boeing planes. < Back Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport to be the world's largest 30 May 2024 The new airport will be five times bigger than the existing airport and have an annual handling capacity of 260 million passengers. Al Maktoum International Airport will be the world’s largest airport. Designs were approved, and construction began in April this year. The airport will be built over 70 square kilometres for around AED128 billion, or ₹2,900 crore. It will boast five parallel runways, five passenger terminal buildings with 400 aircraft gates, and some new innovative aviation technologies will be employed for the first time. It will handle approximately 12 million tons of cargo annually. In the next ten years, all operations of the current airport will be transferred to the new one. A new city will be built around the airport in Dubai South, housing a million people and hosting the world’s leading aviation and logistics enterprises. Phase I of the project will handle 150 million passengers globally and will be completed in ten years. With this, its government aims to catapult Dubai to the world’s top three economic cities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang started discussing a potential alliance during their meeting in the US this year. The discussions are in a preliminary stage, while the government is analysing the cost implications and potential benefits of the AI chip for Indians. Arm or AMD, Nvidia’s partners, are expected to design the core, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a government-owned entity or private firms will develop the top layer. This chip could be used for the Indian Railways security system, Kavach, and other startups and enterprises if the government makes it accessible as a part of India’s AI mission. Nvidia, the world’s second most valuable company after Apple, aspires to leverage India’s massive semiconductor chip designing talent to make a chip specifically for the Indian market. The semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains have almost finished being manufactured in India. They will commence trials on August 15th and be ready for a commercial launch within six months. The sleeper version is needed to launch Vande Bharat on longer routes. These sleeper trains, made by BEML Limited, will have 16 coaches with four bogies each. Besides, noise insulation, sensor-based energy-efficient overhead lighting, sensor-motioned entry/exit doors, cameras, bio-vacuum toilets, and windows will be some of the features. Leg space, seat cushions, and ladders for upper berths will be more improved than other sleeper trains. The gangways will be sealed to keep the dust-free. Vande Bharat trains run at 160 kmph, and the sleeper trains will be tested at 180 kmph. Vande Metro will begin trials in July. It will be a chair car that travels up to 130 kmph. < Back Adani’s US indictment impacting long term investor sentiment 27 Nov 2024 A New York court accused the Adani Group of allegedly bribing Indian government officials. A New York Court of Justice announced charges against several top executives of the Adani Group for allegedly offering bribes to Indian government officials in a project involving the development of a major solar power plant. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accused the conglomerate of raising more than $750 million from investors and $175 million from US investors during this scheme. All this while, Azure Power was also trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Accused are Adani Group’s board members Gautam Adani and his son Sagar Adani; Vneet S Jaain, MD and CEO of Adani Green Energy; and Cyril Cabanes from Azure Power. Adani Group recently secured a USD1.36 billion syndicate loan from eight global banks, mentioned in the current indictment. Adani’s long-term investors have expressed concern about investing further in the group. General sentiment may also prevent other Indian corporations from raising debt from global investors. < Back Govt to launch ‘Sahkar Taxi’ services this year 27 Mar 2025 The app-based ride-hailing service will allow cooperative societies to enrol two, three and four-wheelers. The Ministry of Cooperation has been developing Sahkar Taxi, an app-based ride-hailing service, for over three years. It will be launched this year. It will remove the intermediaries and transfer profits from the rides directly to the drivers. The government will also establish a cooperative insurance company to offer drivers coverage for their vehicles and other essential needs. Several state governments have launched similar services in the past – Kerela Savaari (2022), which shut down, Yatri Saathi in Kolkata (October 2023), and Namma Yatri in Karnataka (November 2022). Uber and Ola have been facing criticism over their pricing practices. The two companies received notices from the Central Consumer Protection Authority regarding reports suggesting that their apps altered prices when a user booked a cab using an iPhone rather than an Android device.
