< Back Privacy, efficacy concerns haunt One Nation, One Student ID (APAAR) 4 Feb 2025 APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) is a unique 12-digit ID given to students to store and manage their academic records. The Education Ministry oversees the APAAR ID scheme, launched in October. It is a student’s permanent digital ID, integrated with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) scheme, to store academic records and make them readily available across PAN-India institutions. Creating a minor’s APAAR ID requires parental consent. The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act mandates verifying that the individual identifying as the parent is an adult. It is done by voluntarily providing identity and age details using virtual tokens issued by the central or state government and available via Digilocker. Privacy concerns surround how parental consent is obtained and the security of student records. While creating an APAAR ID is voluntary, parents feel forced to comply by institutions. Earlier, teachers used their own mobile numbers to meet deadlines for students’ Aadhaar enrolment. Beta Technologies created history on June 3rd when their ALIA CX300, a CTOL (Conventional Take-off and Landing) electric plane, flew from East Hampton to JFK Airport, New York. The plane carried four passengers and a pilot, who reported a quiet cabin ambience without any engine noise. Charging the plane and the 35-minute plane ride cost the company ₹694 ($8), excluding pilot fees. A helicopter ride on this route typically costs over ₹13,000 ($160) for fuel. ALIA CX300 is expected to receive the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval by 2025 end. Fully charging takes less than an hour, and it can fly up to 463 km on a single charge. It can carry up to five passengers and cargo up to 200 cubic feet. Archer Aviation will be the official air taxi partner for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. < Back Phase 1 of Delhi-Dehradun Expressway ready for inauguration 9 Jan 2025 The phase consists of two segments spanning 32 kilometres and includes a 6.5 km elevated corridor. The 210-kilometre-long Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to be operational by this month. The inauguration date will be announced soon. The first of the two ready segments originates at Akshardham, Delhi and includes a 6.5-kilometre elevated corridor. The second segment spans 15 kilometres and connects Ghaziabad and Baghpat on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE). Phase 2 will connect EPE to the Saharanpur bypass, spanning 118 kilometres. The expressway crosses the Rajaji and Shivalik forest divisions. A 12-kilometre elevated road has been constructed to avoid any adverse impacts on the wildlife. Moreover, the expressway features innovative lighting with a reduced warm light spectrum selected by the Wildlife Institute of India scientists to avoid attracting insects and bats and causing disruption to the cars or wildlife. Noise-absorbing sound barriers have also been installed on this elevated stretch. NHAI has filled rockwool material between two aluminium sheets to absorb excessive noise beyond standard levels. < Back National security concerns clause may fail to help Çelebi 26 May 2025 DIAL-Çelebi Hava Servisi signed the concession agreement on August 24th, 2009. Çelebi hired top lawyer Mukul Rohatgi and moved the Delhi High Court against revoking its security clearance. However, the concession agreement with GMR’s Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) states that “DIAL may terminate the contract immediately on grounds of national security or following orders from relevant authorities”, ET reported. Relevant authorities include the Indian Government, the authorities appointed publicly, and AAI. It also states that “if the concession ends on national security grounds, the Concessionaire may remove its equipment at its own cost, with no further payments required from DIAL.” The agreement mandates that all disputes be resolved under Indian Law and only in Delhi courts. GMR battled a similar dispute in 2012 when the Maldives government abruptly terminated their airport project because President Mohamed Waheed supported China. GMR won $270 million in damages. < Back One Nation, One Subscription: India’s centralised library 3 Dec 2024 It will be a one-stop online library offering academic institutions centralised access to global research publications. The Union Cabinet passed a bill last week charting the way to introduce ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ (ONOS) – a JSTOR-like online library. JSTOR is an American digital library of academic resources, including books and journals. This step will streamline the availability of educational resources for students and professors in public sector institutions. The Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) autonomous inter-university centre, will manage and coordinate national subscriptions. It will offer access to around 13,000 e-journals from 30 major global publishers. ₹6,000 crore have been allocated for this scheme for the next three calendar years, 2025-27. The Department of Higher Education will launch a centralised portal offering access to the digital library. The scheme aims to reach 1.8 crore students, professors, and researchers of over 6,300 higher education institutions and R&D institutions under the central and state governments across India. IRINA, built in China and operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has docked in Southeast Asia for the first time. It is currently in Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It has been to South Korea, China, and Singapore since it began sailing in April 2023. The IRINA sails under the Liberian flag due to its favourable maritime regulations and tax benefits. It is almost 400 meters long and 61.3 meters wide, four times the length of a FIFA football field. It boasts a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, the largest for a container ship, and 150 TEUs more than its predecessor, OOCL Spain. A post-Panamax ship carries up to 10,000 TEUs. IRINA has docked in Southeast Asia, highlighting India’s capability to handle Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The US International Trade Commission (USITC) reports that fertiliser imports from Russia rose 21%, uranium by 28% for its nuclear industry, and palladium by 37% for EV manufacturing this year. EU, too, logged goods trade worth €67.5 billion with Russia in 2024. Trump’s backlash at India, as per global analysts, is due to the building frustration after the diplomatic outreach efforts with Russia collapsed. Trump announced he would end the Ukraine War in one week of taking office. He sent his close aide, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow four times for direct negotiations with the Russian officials. In February 2025, the US blocked a UN resolution, which condemned Russia as the aggressor in the Ukraine War, and proposed a counter-resolution omitting any mention of Russian aggression. When the shocked EU nations included “full-scale invasion” in the counter-resolution, the US abstained from voting for its own proposal. Lors du Sommet d’IA, l’Inde et la France ont décidé de développer conjointement une nouvelle génération de réacteurs nucléaires avancés. Les deux pays s’associeront également pour développer des réacteurs modulaires avancés et des petits réacteurs modulaires (SMR) qui seront déployés à des fins civiles. Les trois accords sont des protocoles d’accord comprenant une déclaration d’intention sur l’établissement d’un partenariat sur les réacteurs modulaires avancés et les SMR, le renouvellement du protocole d’accord entre le département de l’Energie atomique (DAE) de l’Inde et CEA, France, assurant la coopération avec le Centre mondial pour le partenariat dans le domaine de l’énergie nucléaires (GCNEP) en Inde. Le troisième accord est conclu entre le DAE et le CEA en vue d’établir une coopération entre le GCNEP (Inde) et l’Institute des sciences et technologies nucléaires (France). La France construit actuellement le réacteur thermonucléaire expérimental international (ITER) à Cadarache, afin de recréer l’énergie du soleil. < Back Govt approves health insurance for Senior Citizens aged 70 and above 12 Sept 2024 Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, or AB PM-JAY, will offer ₹5 lakh health insurance coverage to approximately six crore Indian citizens. Besides new enrolments, those already enrolled under AB PM-JAY will receive an additional health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per annum per family. This amount cannot be shared with family members below the age of 70. The beneficiaries from around 4.5 crore families will be issued a new ID card under the scheme. Citizens enrolled in CGHS, ECHS, or CAPF can choose between their existing coverage and AB PM-JAY. Those with private insurance or enrolled with Employee State Insurance (ESIC) will also be eligible for this scheme. Citizens and families of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and Anganwadi Workers and Helpers (AWWs and AWHs) will also be eligible. AB PM-JAY is the world’s biggest government-funded health insurance scheme for secondary and tertiary care hospitals. Secondary care involves expert medical services offered after referral from a primary care provider, while tertiary care offers highly specialised services for complex health conditions. Previous Next
