< Back Google turns back on its privacy promise; third-party cookies will stay 24 Jul 2024 Google launched the Privacy Sandbox project in 2019 to replace the third-party trackers in its Chrome browser and allow advertisers to target users with appropriate ads. Third-party cookies record and share user information across websites visited. While Safari and Firefox banned these cookies years ago, Google tried to find a way to give advertisers access to user information and its users the option to choose their level of privacy. Google gets 80% of its revenue from advertising. It launched Privacy Sandbox in 2019 to be released within two years. It would shift the control of online user tracking from third-party trackers to Google Chrome. This would mean that ad-tech players and companies would not be able to track their ad performances. This opened the floodgates to several lawsuits and complaints filed with regulators and competition authorities against Google across the UK and the US. After repeated delays, Google announced on July 22nd that Chrome will continue to support third-party cookies while allowing users to block them, subject to approval from the UK-based Competition and Markets Authority. < Back Zomato, Swiggy planning to launch service marketplace 11 Nov 2024 Swiggy is piloting “Yello” service marketplace, while Zomato is planning to introduce concierge services. To diversify their offerings, Swiggy and Zomato are planning services marketplace. Swiggy is piloting a marketplace called “Yello”, offering to connect its customers with service professionals like lawyers, fitness trainers, dieticians, astrologers, and therapists, ET reported. It is yet to be clarified if Yello will be a part of the Swiggy app. Swiggy is experimenting with a new premium membership called “Rare” offering well-to-do users exclusive access to high-end events like Formula One races, art exhibitions, concerts, and priority bookings at luxury restaurants. Zomato recently acquired Paytm’s event booking business, Insider for ₹2,048 crore. It is now creating a WhatsApp-enabled concierge service operated by human customer service agents instead of chatbots to offer a more personalised experience. Swiggy is creating a superapp, hosting Instamart, Dineout, and Swiggy Genie. < Back African continental split to take 5-10 million years 28 Jan 2026 Africa is slowly tearing apart along the East African Rift System, where the Nubian, Somalian, and Arabian plates diverge. The rift has been active for about 22–25 million years. It stretches from the Afar region of Ethiopia to Mozambique and forms a Y-shaped “triple junction” in Afar, one of the few places on Earth where three rifts meet. Mantle plumes beneath East Africa heat and thin the crust, which causes active rifting, intense volcanism, and frequent earthquakes. GPS and satellite data reveal the crust is steadily thinning, with some segments already transitioning to early oceanic crust. Parts of Afar lie below sea level. The Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea will eventually flood the deepening rift and create a new ocean in roughly 5–10 million years. Climate shifts, including long-term drying and shrinking lakes like Turkana, may be accelerating fault movement, increasing geological hazards for millions living along the rift. < Back Apple caught in a horde of anti-trust probes in the US 22 Dec 2023 Over a dozen companies approached the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the tech giant for anticompetitive behaviour. Over 12 technology advocacy groups wrote to the US Department of Justice requesting an investigation into Apple’s anticompetitive behaviour. Apple recently blocked Beeper, the messaging service that made iMessage compatible with Android devices through its app Beeper Mini. The move triggered a reaction from a horde of advocacy groups, like Demand Progress, the American Economic Liberties Project, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Fight for the Future. Beeper Mini allowed Android users to experience iMessage features like tapbacks, blue bubbles, and end-to-end encrypted messaging between Android and iPhone users. The DOJ has been probing Apple for anti-trust issues since 2020. Tech Oversight Project’s letter to the American judicial body called out Apple for favouring its products and issuing unfair policies for third-party apps and app marketplace. An ongoing anti-trust investigation in Europe could roll out a judgement in early 2024 against Apple’s control over the app marketplace and impose a fine. Previous Next

< Back Medical supplies plane crashes at London Southend airport 14 Jul 2025 The 12-metre Beechcraft King Air B200 plane is confirmed to carry two pilots; the passenger count is unconfirmed. On July 13, a London to Lelystad (Netherlands) bound plane crashed immediately after takeoff. It was a medical supplies plane that took off at 8:18 pm IST, reached 175 feet, tilted left, inverted mid-air, and nosedived headfirst, crashing on impact. The Beechcraft King Air B200 plane can carry a maximum of 9 passengers and 1-2 crew. London Southend Airport was immediately shut down. At least five international flights were cancelled, including EasyJet flights to Malta, Faro, Pisa, and Palma. The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) is heading the enquiry, supported by the local Essex Police. Zeusch Aviation, the Dutch expert in medical evacuation and private charter planes, operated the flight. Zeusch is assisting AAIB with the investigation. The Aircraft had completed the flight from Athens to Pula, Croatia, and then to London the same day. < Back Workers Union moves Labour Board against Trump, Musk 15 Aug 2024 The Union Auto Workers Union (UAWU) filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) over attempting to threaten workers. Donald Trump and Elon Musk held a two-hour interview on X, during which the former US President admired Musk’s ability to fire employees should they threaten to go on strike. Federal law states that workers cannot be fired for going on strike. Moreover, the National Labor Relations Act makes it illegal to threaten workers with firing if they announce a strike. Since Elon Musk chuckled at Trump's remarks but did not comment, the NLRB is struggling to find him guilty. UAWU President Shawn Fain has exchanged barbs with Trump and Musk in the past and openly supports Kamala Harris for the President. Elon Musk has previously engaged in unwarranted firings of staff. He fired almost half of the Twitter employees when he bought the company in 2022 and a Tesla employee in 2021 for engaging in union activities. SpaceX Board accused Musk of illegal firings this year. Country’s largest fashion retailer, Reliance Retail, is expanding its distribution of exclusive branded clothing and fashion products in third party stores across India beyond its own stores. The company already has over 50 exclusive brands in its portfolio, which will rise 2-3 times over the next few years. Reliance Retail is running a pilot program under Ajio Business, which will be expanded by the summer of 2024. Eventually, the company will launch its apparel brands across Western and Indian wear, lingerie and innerwear, jewellery, fashion accessories, and footwear in the mid to premium range. Its products will be available across third party sellers. Reliance expects the B2B apparel business to grow more revenue than its retail stores within five years. It owns 4,000 stores across brands and 2,600 Trends stores. Trends outlets will be expanded by 15% and newer retail formats by 50% yearly in the next few years. Previous Next

Families of four victims who lost their lives in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad sued Honeywell and Boeing in the Delaware Superior Court, US, where the two companies are incorporated. Boeing is the aircraft manufacturer, and Honeywell supplies the fuel cutoff switches. The complaint lodged on Tuesday accused the two companies of failing to address a known safety hazard. The locking mechanism on the switch in the 787-8 Dreamliner was prone to auto-cutoff or missing altogether. It is placed directly behind the thrust levers, which could lead to accidental shut-off, thus disrupting the fuel supply and thrust during take-off. The families allege Boeing and Honeywell knew about the hazard owing to a 2018 advisory issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about disengaged locking mechanisms on some Boeing planes. Mayonnaise made from raw eggs contains egg yolk, vinegar, vegetable oil, and seasonings. Tamil Nadu has become the third state to ban the production, storage, distribution, and sale of mayonnaise for a year, effective April 8, 2025. Tamil Nadu’s Food Safety and Drug Administration has termed it a ‘high risk’ food due to its potential to cause food poisoning from Salmonella bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia Coli, and Listeria monocytogenes). Food poisoning symptoms would include diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever. These bacteria thrive in warmer temperatures, so mayonnaise can pose higher safety risks when improperly cooked or stored. Vegan and pasteurised egg mayonnaise undergo heat treatment that kills the harmful bacteria. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have introduced street food hygiene standards and imposed limits on synthetic food colours in sweets and beverages. < Back IndiGo sues Mahindra Electric for trademark infringement 4 Dec 2024 IndiGo accused the EV maker of using ‘6E’ in the latest SUV, Mahindra BE 6e, similar to its own callsign ‘6E’. IndiGo has moved the Delhi High Court against Mahindra Electric. Its new SUV, Mahindra BE 6e, is slated for launch in February. The Registrar of Trademarks accepted Mahindra’s request to register ‘BE 6e’ in the Class 12 vehicle range on November 25th. If it gets registered, Mahindra will be legally allowed to use the ‘6e’ trademark for its motor vehicles and auto components, except two-wheelers and their components. Mahindra Electric Automobile is Mahindra & Mahindra’s (M&M) subsidiary. The company introduced its first pure electric models on November 26th - BE 6e and XEV 9e. It responded to IndiGo’s petition, saying that its car mark fundamentally differs from IndiGo’s standalone ‘6E’, which denotes an airline. The first hearing could be scheduled for December 9th. < Back RBI raises prepaid mobility cards limit to up to ₹3,000 without KYC 18 Mar 2024 The National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) can now be issued with a limit of up to up to ₹3,000 with no KYC. The Reserve Bank of India relaxed KYC norms for the mobility cards. NCMCs are debit, credit and prepaid cards issued by over 25 partner banks and RuPay. These open-loop cards allow commuters to pay for transport systems like metros, road toll and parking plazas, buses, suburban railways, and fuel stations across India. Users can use an NCMC to withdraw money and make online retail payments. It permits offline payments for low-value transactions. The Near Field Communication (NFC) technology facilitates tap-and-go payments. Due to stringent KYC norms, the card saw limited usage, with only 200 million people getting the NCMCs since its launch on March 4th, 2019. The government tried replicating London’s Oyster card or Hong Kong’s Octopus Cards through the ‘One Nation, One Card’ initiative. However, the scattered transportation system and the RBI ban on Paytm Payments Bank, one of the key players issuing NCMCs, made implementing it challenging. Previous Next
