The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) banned the sale of several rum and whisky brands from Diageo India’s United Spirits, Inbrew Beverages, and Mohan Rocky Springwater. The regulator found that these products were substandard due to added flavours mimicking the taste and aroma of the beverages themselves. FSSAI has banned sales of Antiquity Blue Whisky, Royal Challenge Whisky and the McDowell’s rum variants, Inbrew’s Bagpiper Deluxe Whisky and Old Cask Deluxe XXX Rum from Madhya Pradesh, and select Old Monk variants such as The Legend, Gold Reserve, and XXX Matured Rum manufactured in Maharashtra. < Back Nilekani to lead task force on exam reforms 27 Jul 2026 The National Testing Agency (NTA) terminated 47 officials as part of a major overhaul following the NEET UG 2026 paper leak and nationwide protests. Prime Minister Modi today announced a high‑powered task force to overhaul India’s examination system, and appointed Nandan Nilekani as its head. The committee aims to make exams leak‑proof, transparent, and technology‑driven . Nilekani had led the development of Aadhaar and UPI. Nilekani has worked with the Union Government in the past to set up the Aadhaar ecosystem and Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The multidisciplinary panel includes former ISRO chairman S. Somanath, former IB director Tapan Deka, IIT‑Madras director V. Kamakoti, former Education Secretary Anita Karwal, and logistics expert Amrit Lal Meena. Fast‑track courts and a stringent new law have also been announced to punish those responsible for exam leaks. An amendment bill is set to be introduced in Parliament today. < Back Hormuz reopens as Iran proposes crude exports to India 30 Jun 2026 Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has begun to ease, allowing most India bound energy shipments to clear the chokepoint after days of disruption. With the reopening of Hormuz, only 12 vessels remain and are expected to transit soon. This development coincides with Iran signalling readiness to resume crude exports to India following the lifting of US‑led sanctions. Iranian minister Mohsen Paknejad met India’s Hardeep Singh Puri at the Brics energy ministers’ meeting, where he reiterated this interest. India is evaluating the proposal carefully. With China currently the main buyer of Iranian crude, India’s entry could diversify Iran’s customer base and strengthen its pricing flexibility. 30 India‑linked vessels have already crossed Hormuz, and a few more are still waiting to transit. Around half of India’s crude, 70% of LPG, and 90% of LNG normally pass through Hormuz. Before the conflict, approximately 135 vessels crossed Hormuz daily (all nations combined). It can join live phone calls when users say “Hey Jio,” and offer transcription, summaries, and task execution in multiple Indian languages. Reliance is also planning to introduce an AI home platform that proactively manages household needs. Parallelly, Jio is exploring a sovereign Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network , potentially involving 1,600+ satellites , supported by domestic ground stations. This would allow high-speed connectivity in remote and underserved regions and reduce dependence on foreign satellite operators. These initiatives, combined, aim to make India self-reliant in computing, connectivity, and next‑generation digital services. India is facing an acute shortage of two essential chemotherapy drugs, cisplatin and carboplatin, due to a steep rise in raw material (API) costs, thus making production unviable for manufacturers. To prevent treatment disruptions, the government has invoked Paragraph 19 of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. It is an emergency clause, rarely used, that allows drug prices to be increased beyond the standard annual ceiling in exceptional circumstances. This move may raise prices by 50% or more. However, it is intended to restore the supply of these irreplaceable first‑line cancer therapies. Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and oncologists nationwide have warned of alarming shortages, with potentially fatal consequences for thousands of patients if supply remains disrupted. An inter‑ministerial committee approved 4 of the 82 industry applications received for price hikes. These are cisplatin, carboplatin, and two anti‑tetanus immunoglobulin injections. < Back Govt approves health insurance for Senior Citizens aged 70 and above 12 Sept 2024 Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, or AB PM-JAY, will offer ₹5 lakh health insurance coverage to approximately six crore Indian citizens. Besides new enrolments, those already enrolled under AB PM-JAY will receive an additional health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per annum per family. This amount cannot be shared with family members below the age of 70. The beneficiaries from around 4.5 crore families will be issued a new ID card under the scheme. Citizens enrolled in CGHS, ECHS, or CAPF can choose between their existing coverage and AB PM-JAY. Those with private insurance or enrolled with Employee State Insurance (ESIC) will also be eligible for this scheme. Citizens and families of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and Anganwadi Workers and Helpers (AWWs and AWHs) will also be eligible. AB PM-JAY is the world’s biggest government-funded health insurance scheme for secondary and tertiary care hospitals. Secondary care involves expert medical services offered after referral from a primary care provider, while tertiary care offers highly specialised services for complex health conditions. Previous Next
