Azerbaijan heavily relies on oil and gas trade, which accounts for 90% of its exports. India imported crude oil worth USD 663.63 million in FY23, when the overall India-Azerbaijan trade reached USD 779.28 million. In 2023, Azerbaijan imported rice worth USD 50 million; India supplied 84% of it. India imported goods worth USD 115.65 million in FY23, ET reported. Of these, tobacco accounted for the largest chunk of exports at USD 23.5 million, followed by tea and coffee, pharma, and then non-basmati rice at USD 3.2 million. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) boycotted all trade with Turkey and Azerbaijan, including travel and tourism. The community of top Indian traders urged the film industry to boycott these two countries for film shoots. While the Indian government has refrained from officially banning trade with them, visa applications and bookings for Turkey and Azerbaijan have dropped by 42% and 60%. Indian edtech industry suffered from the aftereffects of obsessive selling and misselling. While running to get millions of dollars of funding, it lost touch with the fundamentals of its product - quality education. That's what prompted Cuemath founder, Manan Khurma to take the reigns back from Vivek Sunder, a former P&G and Swiggy. Khurma asked all its employees, including the salespeople, to start teaching so they could understand the product better. To refine the system, Cuemath fired around 300 employees between May and August this year. Defying the industry practices and the lead generation channels Sunder created, Khurma is moving away from using his tutors as salespeople, rather focus on referrals. < Back Govt rejects DIAL’s proposal to levy Airport Dev Fee for air train corridor 5 Jan 2024 Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) planned to levy an Airport Development Fee (ADF) to fund its latest ₹3,500 crore air train corridor project connecting all three airport terminals. The Ministry of Civil Aviation rejected GMR Group-operated DIAL’s plans to charge an Airport Development Fee (ADF) to fund its latest project of an Air Train Corridor connecting all three terminals. The ministry directed the organisation to levy a User Development Fee (UDF) instead once the train is operational. DIAL is now looking to raise funds via debt or equity. Passengers currently rely on cabs and buses to travel between terminals, and this project will reduce travel time. ADF pre-funds airport infrastructure projects and allows operators to charge passengers for infrastructure upgrades. A UDF is levied after project completion if the airport fails to generate adequate returns. The earlier proposal included four stops at T1, T3, cargo terminal, and Aerocity, which may increase to six to attract more paying customers. Airports Authority of India supported levying UDF, which guarantees 46% of revenue to be shared with the airport operator. Previous Next

< Back India, Croatia to strengthen trade ties 20 Jun 2025 This was the first visit to Croatia by an Indian Prime Minister after diplomatic ties were established in 1992. While visiting Croatia on June 18th, PM Modi announced enhanced defence cooperation between the two countries. India invited Croatian firms to invest in its coastal infrastructure development and shipbuilding. India will invest in Croatian semiconductors, clean tech, IT, and pharma industries. India will share its space expertise, and educational institutes of both countries will conduct research projects together. India finalised a five-year cultural exchange programme with Croatia and will soon sign a mobility agreement to facilitate people’s movement between the two countries. Croatia’s major ports, Rijeka, Ploce, and Split, are a part of the EU’s TEN-T network and support trans-European trade. These can offer an alternate entry into Europe in the troubled Suez Canal and Red Sea routes. Croatia is an EU and NATO member and can offer India access to their regulatory systems. < Back OYO to acquire US’ G6 Hospitality for $525 million 24 Sept 2024 Blackstone Real Estate owns G6 Hospitality, which has brands like Motel 6 and Studio 6 under its umbrella. Oravel Stays, the parent of the Indian hospitality giant OYO, launched in the US in 2019 and swiftly expanded to 320 hotels across 35 states. Last year, OYO added almost 100 hotels and planned to add 250 more this year. It has now agreed to acquire G6 Hospitality from Blackstone Real Estate for ₹4,383 crore or USD 525 million in an all-cash deal. Motel 6 is an over-60-year-old brand that operates around 1500 properties in the US and Canada. It generates $1.7 billion in room revenue annually, which creates a strong fee structure and cash flow for its parent, G6. OYO’s comprehensive technology offerings, global distribution network, and marketing expertise will help both Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands grow. The deal is expected to close in early 2025, subject to certain conditions. Motel 6 will continue to operate as a separate entity after the acquisition. Previous Next

To diversify their offerings, Swiggy and Zomato are planning services marketplace. Swiggy is piloting a marketplace called “Yello”, offering to connect its customers with service professionals like lawyers, fitness trainers, dieticians, astrologers, and therapists, ET reported. It is yet to be clarified if Yello will be a part of the Swiggy app. Swiggy is experimenting with a new premium membership called “Rare” offering well-to-do users exclusive access to high-end events like Formula One races, art exhibitions, concerts, and priority bookings at luxury restaurants. Zomato recently acquired Paytm’s event booking business, Insider for ₹2,048 crore. It is now creating a WhatsApp-enabled concierge service operated by human customer service agents instead of chatbots to offer a more personalised experience. Swiggy is creating a superapp, hosting Instamart, Dineout, and Swiggy Genie. This deal could boost Viacom18-Star’s market share to 35% in OTT and 40% in TV, leaving behind Sony-Zee’s 15% OTT market share. It may end up with a top line of around ₹25,000 crores and 115 channels and two streaming platforms (JioCinema and Disney+Hotstar). Previously, Viacom18 had won the rights to IPL 2023-27, and BCCI India matches that were once Disney+Hotstar property. Adding to its woes, Disney’s deal with HBO for megahits like Game of Thrones and Succession ended, causing a 16% decline in its subscriber base. To assist AI-driven Indian startups, the government plans to set up 25,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPU) cluster costing between ₹8,000-10,000 crores. GPUs help in complex computations for AI processing and are hard to find and expensive for these startups. The move will help these companies scale operations and secure better funding. Several AI-driven startups often petitioned the government to increase compute capacity, which refers to the software and hardware available to support AI workloads and applications. The new cluster will manifest as a Public-Private Partnership and the capacity offered to startups as a service. The proposal for the 25,000 GPU cluster will be finalised by year end. Global supercomputers run on 30,000 GPUs, while India’s supercomputer, Airawat, installed in the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Pune, has 640 GPUs. The latest partnership between American giant Nvidia, Reliance Jio, and Tata Sons is expected to boost compute capacity in India. Previous Next

By March-end, DMart announced a new line-up of stores across the country, an increase of 13% annually. Its revenue spiked 20% year-on-year to ₹12,393 crores, with a 7% increase in revenue per store and a 5% jump in revenue per square foot. DMart offers low prices brought in by lower operating costs and quick inventory turnover. First, it buys in bulk from its suppliers at heavy discounts. It offers a quick payback cycle of approximately 7-9 days, compared to the average 30 days in the retail industry. Moreover, opening a group of stores in the same region reduces transportation costs and attracts better deals. Second, DMart doesn’t rent; it buys its properties, thus removing rental expenditures. It doesn’t spend much on marketing; instead, it uses word of mouth. Its focus on affordable pricing further strengthens its position in the FMCG domain. Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey’s latest product, Bitchat, is in the beta testing phase currently, with a live version available on TestFlight. The app does not need central servers, mobile numbers, email IDs or personal account creation to function. It facilitates encrypted messaging between nearby devices that form local Bluetooth clusters when users move around physically. These clusters direct the flow of messages between devices, enabling communication with users beyond a specific physical range, without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular service. ‘Bridge’ devices can connect overlapping clusters and expand the Bluetooth mesh over larger distances. Messages are relayed across devices, thus crossing a normal Bluetooth range. Messages are stored on devices and are deleted by default, without being sent to a central server, thus ensuring privacy. Users can create password-protected group chats, called Rooms, named using hashtags. Dorsey plans to add WiFi Direct for faster messaging in a future update.
