< Back Jio to launch satellite internet in India 15 Jun 2024 Orbit Connect India, a joint venture between Jio Platforms and Luxembourg-based SES, will provide satellite internet across India. Orbit Connect India secured the approval of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to offer satellite internet across India. It gathered three approvals between April and June 2024, which allowed it to position satellites above India. However, it will need more approvals, for instance, from the Department of Telecommunications, to begin operations. Amazon’s Kuiper and Elon Musk-owned Starlink are still awaiting approval to offer satellite internet in India. The British Satellite Telecom firm Immarsat and OneWeb, backed by Eutelsat Bharti Enterprises, also obtained approval from IN-SPACe to operate satellite internet in India. Given the demand for satellite internet, especially in rural India, the market is expected to grow by 36% to reach ₹16,000 crore in the next five years. < Back Ford may re-enter India by 2025 13 Sept 2024 It has held multiple negotiation rounds with the Tamil Nadu government over the past six months but has yet to make a final decision. After exiting India in 2021, Ford is planning a comeback next year. Over the past six months, it has held many discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to discuss EV and ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle production at its old Maraimalai Nagar plant just outside Chennai. Talks of its return erupted in the market after Ford India filed for a design patent for the new Endeavour model, its bestselling product in the country. After its exit, several OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) showed interest in acquiring the plant, but nothing was finalised. Ford left India after suffering operational losses to the tune of $2 billion in a decade. Moreover, its product strategy did not succeed with Indian consumers, who prefer smaller, fuel-efficient cars. < Back Quick commerce apps to start delivering electronics, white goods by Diwali 18 Jun 2024 By Diwali, quick commerce apps like BBNow, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart and Zomato’s Blinkit plan to start selling electronics and appliances in 10-45 minutes. As companies experience up to 45% sales through quick commerce, electronics brands are also partnering with quick commerce apps. Tata’s Croma is partnering with BBNow to sell smartphones. If apps can offer exchanges and EMI buying options demanded by customers, this will be a significant revenue stream. These products are expected to bring in much more revenue and enhance customer stickiness than other products bought on these apps. However, for large appliances, these apps will sell only 4-5 top-selling models or the ones in high demand, as per customer reviews, and not as wide a range as Amazon or Flipkart. Big appliances will consume larger warehousing spaces and four-wheeler deliveries. Blinkit ran a pilot selling iPhone for a limited period last year. < Back Pakistan losing above $760k daily due to airspace closure 28 Apr 2025 In 2019, Pakistan closed its airspace for Indian carriers after the Pulwama attack, which cost it USD 760,000 daily. Airlines pay an overflight fee to countries for using their airspace. A Boeing 737 crossing Pakistani airspace pays USD 580 in overflight fees; larger aircraft pay more. Today, around 350 international flights cross its airspace daily. Overflight charges comprise around 20% of their annual civil aviation revenue. After the Pulwama attack, closing its airspace cost the Pakistani Civil Aviation Authority and Pakistan International Airlines around USD100 million in a few months. This included USD232,000 lost in daily overflight revenue. Its total aviation revenue is expected to be over USD6 billion by 2029, compared to India’s estimated USD30 billion aviation revenue in 2025. 60% of the annual revenue comes from the east-to-west air corridor spanning 10,000 km, which connects Asia with the Middle East and Europe. Skyroot Aerospace is a Hyderabad‑based private rocket startup founded by IIT graduates and former ISRO engineers Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka in 2018. The funding round was co‑led by Sherpalo Ventures and GIC , with participation from BlackRock , Greenko founders , Arkam Ventures , Playbook Partners , and the Shanghvi Family Office . Skyroot is preparing for the June launch of Vikram‑1 , India’s first privately developed orbital‑class rocket , subject to regulatory approvals and vehicle readiness. It will carry earth‑observation satellites and experimental payloads. Skyroot previously launched Vikram‑S in 2022, the first private Indian rocket to reach space . The new capital will scale manufacturing, increase launch frequency, and accelerate the development of Vikram‑- 2, a one-tonne-class cryogenic-stage rocket. The global space launch market reached $16.13 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow to $52.83 billion by 2035, as per Global Growth Insights. < Back Mumbai T1 airport to undergo redevelopment from Nov 2025 31 Jan 2025 The construction is expected to end by 2029. Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 1 will undergo redevelopment from this year end to increase the handling capacity by 42% to 20 million passengers annually. CSMIA is owned and operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Limited, that owns 74%, and Airports Authority of India that owns the rest 26%. Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 and the ready-for-opening Navi Mumbai airport will cater to the passenger traffic during the redevelopment. The new terminal will be redeveloped in phases, beginning with demolition in November 2025, followed by construction. It will mainly cater to domestic traffic, with a potential integration for international flights in the future. District cooling systems, next-gen electrical substations, direct metro access, and biometric security checks will be a few upgrades to the terminal. Anthropic launched a major expansion of Claude with new job-specific plugins designed to automate work across HR, banking, finance, equity research, private equity, engineering, and operations. The update allows Claude to function as a specialised AI agent embedded directly into enterprise workflows, thus eliminating the need for employees to switch between tools or manually transfer outputs. HR teams can now generate offer letters, onboarding plans, performance reviews, and compensation analyses. Investment banking and equity research teams can review documents, update financial models, and draft pitch materials or research notes. Private equity teams can automate diligence by extracting financial data and modelling scenarios. Companies can personalise these plugins, build internal marketplaces, and manage everything through a new customised dashboard. < Back Akasa Air begins allowing pets up to 10 kg in the cabin 9 May 2024 In November 2022, the airline first announced permitting passengers to carry their pets, like cats and dogs, in cabin or cargo as per their weight. Akasa Air announced on Wednesday its plans to permit passengers to carry their pets weighing up to 10 kg, including the weight of the container, in the cabin. The limit was 7 kg earlier. They also allow pets weighing up to 32 kg with the container in cargo. The decision is based on customer feedback. Besides this, Akasa Air is also implementing a new travel certificate policy, which allows pets’ travel certificates to stay valid for 15 days instead of three. This will facilitate customers booking a shorter return journey within 15 days, while customers travelling beyond 15 days will need a new travel certificate. Since its launch in November 2022, Akasa Air has carried over 3,200 pets. In addition to Akasa, Air India allows pets in the cabin, while Spicejet allows them only in cargo. < Back McDonald’s and Crocs launch footwear merchandise 20 Nov 2023 The brand will offer a fast food themed footwear collection inspired by McDonald’s characters Grimace, Birdie, and Hamburglar. McDonald's has partnered with Crocs to sell its fast food themed footwear in select countries, in some Crocs retail and wholesale outlets and Crocs.com . The footwear range falls between $70 and $75, inspired by McDonald’s Birdie, Grimace, and Hamburglar characters. The Grimace-inspired shoes are faux fur lined sandals, while the other two are clogs. The red and yellow coloured clogs in sync with the brand’s theme will also be available. Customers can also get the option to buy matching socks starting at $20. The merchandise includes McDonald’s themed Jibbitz charms like the brand’s golden arches, the Big Mac, and French fires that can be attached to the clogs. The fast food giant had partnered with British skate brand PALACE in August to launch limited edition merchandise. < Back Zomato to acquire Paytm’s Insider, movie ticketing biz for ₹2,048 cr 22 Aug 2024 Paytm will also transfer its 280 employees of the ticketing business to Zomato. This move will allow Zomato to expand its entertainment offerings, while Paytm will shift its focus back to fintech. On August 21, the Zomato and One97 Communications (Paytm) boards approved the all-cash deal worth ₹2,048 crore, and the two startup giants informed the stock exchanges. Paytm will first transfer its entertainment ticketing business to its fully owned subsidiaries, Wasteland Entertainment, which runs the Insider platform, and Orbgen Technologies, which operates TicketNew. Paytm’s stake in these companies will then be gradually transferred to Zomato over the next 12 months. Ticketing will continue to be available on the Paytm app during the transition. Zomato has been expanding its offerings beyond dining out and running the food festival Zomaland. It will offer dining and ticketing services via its new ‘District’ app, which is expected to be launched within the next few weeks.
