< Back India-West Asia-EU Corridor to make travel 40% faster Ishita Nigam 12 Sept 2023 The corridor will connect India's West Coast to the Middle East via shipping lines, pass through UAE, Saudi, Jordan, and Israel via a railway line, and enter the Mediterranean via France, Germany, and Italy. Leaders from India, the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, Africa and the EU unveiled a Memorandum of Understanding to build a trade corridor connecting Asia, Africa and Europe. The new passage will provide neutral trade opportunities for manufacturing, food security and supply chain logistics. It will have two sections: the East Corridor connecting India to the Gulf and the Northern Corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe. This challenges the decade-old Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that India has always opposed. The BRI acted as China’s tool to dominate developing nations by creating a debt trap and strategic issues. Many countries have started opposing the BRI, including Italy, that had joined the Chinese project in 2019. It is expected to reduce shipping time and expenses, fuel consumption, and make commerce between India and the Mediterranean more sustainable, faster, and cheaper. Previous Next

< Back Yoga to be included in Asian Games as demonstrative sport 2 Jul 2024 Yoga will be a demonstration sport with no medals on offer in the Asian Games 2026, to be held in Nagoya, Japan. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha wrote a letter on June 26th to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) acting President Randhir Singh, requesting him to include Yoga in the Asian Games. This ancient Indian sport will not offer any medals in the Asian Games 2026; it will be added as a competitive sport in Doha Asiad 2030. India has also been trying to get Yoga included as a competitive sport for the Olympic Games 2036 if it secures the right to host the games. Yoga has been witnessing worldwide acceptance. The Louvre Museum in Paris plans to offer visitors Yoga sessions with instructors ahead of the Olympics, which start this month. The Sports Ministry-run Mission Olympics Cell intends to recommend six games for the Olympics, including Yoga, Kabaddi, T20 Cricket, Chess, Kho Kho, and Squash. Boldfit recorded sales up to 25% higher in the first week of 2024. Health and Fitness apps and many subscription-based companies cashed in massive sales on New Year due to resolutions. HealthifyMe, which offers fitness coaching and diet and nutrition plans, broke its previous records. 66% of its revenue came from subscription renewal compared to 50% in January 2023. Curefit-owned Cultsport, a sportswear and equipment seller, witnessed a similar hike but expects a downward spiral by the end of the month and a further 30% drop in February. Boldfit, which sells fitness products and nutritional supplements, saw up to 22,000 orders daily, or one order every four seconds, comparable to the Prime Day sale in 2023. The January-March quarter sees the highest industry sales, especially in nutritional supplements, health equipment like yoga mats, sports shoes, and fitness coaching. < Back Income Tax Bill 2025 may improve compliance 13 Feb 2025 It introduces the term ‘Tax Year’ – 12 months from April 1. The term will replace the existing concept of assessment and previous years. The new Income Tax Bill is proposed to be implemented from April 1, 2026. It rewrites the direct tax law to improve compliance and reduce litigation. It retains the old tax regime, rates, and capital gains for individuals and businesses. There will be no change in tax rates or introduction of any new taxes for individual salaries. However, the Bill consolidates deductions like standard deduction, gratuity, and Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) into one place and introduces a formula for calculating depreciation and taxes. Incomes not included in the total income that were earlier part of the main body of the IT Act have been shifted to separate schedules to simply the new Bill. The Bill introduces Section 275 )6) mandating the Dispute Resolution Panel (DRP) to provide detailed directions, explaining the points of determination, the decision, and its reasons. < Back Flipkart to launch its quick commerce service despite failed talks with Zepto 19 Apr 2024 Like the failed discussions with Dunzo, its talks with Zepto are unlikely to be revived. Flipkart reduced its delivery timelines and launched same-day deliveries at no extra cost in February. It launched the service in 20 cities, including tier 2 cities like Guwahati and Ludhiana and metros like Bengaluru and Delhi. It also runs Flipkart Quick, a 90-120-minute delivery service for fruits and vegetables in some cities. Zepto and Blinkit are adding new stock-keeping units to cross 10,000 units across India. They are also venturing into eCommerce by tying up with apparel brands like Adidas, Jockey, Manyavar, and Pepe Jeans. Flipkart failed to buy an established quick commerce service like Dunzo and now Zepto. Still, it plans to launch its own service this year by setting up thousands of dark stores nationwide. < Back NVIDIA partners with Indian conglomerates for AI expansion 28 Oct 2024 It is partnering with key tech companies to boost India’s AI capabilities and make it more affordable and accessible. To accelerate AI adoption in India, NVIDIA has partnered with Reliance Industries to build a large-scale AI infrastructure with NVIDIA’s GB 200 supercomputer and other tech deployed for developing scalable AI set-up. It has collaborated with Tech Mahindra to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) to develop sovereign large language models (LLMs) and agentic and physical AI infrastructure. Tata Communications and Yotta Data Services will embrace NVIDIA’s Hopper and Blackwell AI chips to power the largest supercomputers, while Infosys will adopt NVIDIA’s AI Stack to create smaller LLMs for different industries. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will partner with it to fuel AI adoption across industries and launch industry-specific solutions. NVIDIA formed alliances with Flipkart and Zoho to build LLMs in Indian languages. Hanooman AI introduced Everest 1.0, a generative AI foundational model built using NVIDIA’s GPUs. < Back Microsoft, OpenAI alliance receives clearance from UK 7 Mar 2025 UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said this alliance does not need an antitrust investigation under merger rules. In 2016, OpenAI committed to using Microsoft Azure as the primary cloud service. In 2019, after OpenAI converted from a non-profit to a hybrid model, Microsoft invested $1 billion. In 2023, Microsoft invested $10 billion, bringing the total to $13 billion. These investments allowed Microsoft to integrate OpenAI’s products with its own. Microsoft may garner 75% of OpenAI's profits as a return on investment along with a 49% stake in the company. In 2023, CMA ordered an investigation to check if the alliance gave either of the firms a stronger hold and influence over the other. After 14 months of scrutiny, the competition authority approved the association. Microsoft faced antitrust issues in the UK and the US after its initial investment in 2019 and the boardroom battle of 2023 that led to the ousting and reinstatement of Sam Altman. < Back Banu Mushtaq: The second Indian to win International Booker Prize 22 May 2025 Geetanjali Shree was the first Indian to win the award in 2022 for her book ‘Tomb of Sand’, translated from Hindi to English by Daisy Rockwell. Banu Mushtaq, a lawyer and women’s rights activist, and her translator, Deepa Bhasti, won the International Booker Prize 2025 for her novel Heart Lamp ( Edeya Hanate in Kannada). It is a collection of 12 short stories on the Dalits and women, selected from her works published between 1990 and 2023. Mushtaq, born in 1948 in Hassan, Karnataka, emerged as a coveted literary voice during the Bandaya Sahitya (Rebel Literature) movement in the 1970s. Around 20 years ago, she faced a knife attack for advocating women’s rights to pray in mosques. The International Booker Prize includes a £50,000 cash reward, split equally between the writer and the translator. Each shortlisted author and translator receives £2,500. This is the first time a collection of short stories has won the British literary honour, and the second time a Kannada to English novel has been shortlisted. The first was U.R. It offers home sample collection within 60 minutes and test results within 6 hours. These services are available across six major metropolitan cities: Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Its pharmacy business covers all serviceable PIN codes in 23 cities. In November 2024, it launched teleconsultation for ₹99. For its online pharmacy, Amazon faces stiff competition from existing players like Tata 1mg and Apollo, which have a strong foothold, local pharmacies that often sell without prescriptions, and a strong trade lobby opposing the growth of e-pharmacies. Amazon intends to enrich customer data to create a personalised wellness ecosystem in India, and healthcare retail is an integral part of the strategy. During the festive season, Indians are choosing iPhones and cars over travel. The Trump Administration’s new visa rules have impacted the travel of Indian tech employees. Due to fear, many Indians who travel back home for Diwali never took the flight this year. US tariffs are impacting small businesses that contribute to air travel, ET reported. Besides, US, Canadian, and European visas are challenging to obtain, which leaves only South Asia as an option for Indians. Countries with easy and on-arrival visas are experiencing full flights. Following the DGCA directive to add capacity and prevent rate hikes, Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet added more than 1,700 flights. This year, however, flights aren’t sold out; hotels are. Air India Express rolled out a festive offer allowing Indian expats travelling across the Gulf to carry an extra 10 kg of baggage for just one dirham (Dh1). < Back 10,000 Canadians face layoffs after Indian student numbers decline 11 Jul 2025 Canadian colleges are laying off administrative and support staff as funding declines after a drop in Indian student numbers. Marc Miller, the Canadian Immigration Minister, in February, asked educational institutions to reduce their overdependence on international students from a particular region, diversify hiring processes and refine educational standards. Canadian universities receive over 50% of applicants from India. Resultantly, Ontario’s universities forecast $330 million in losses for 2025, rising to $600 million the following year. Sheridan College suspended 40 programs in November 2024 due to budgetary shortcomings and reduced enrolment. Northern College of Timmins anticipates a $6 million deficit for the academic year (AY) 2025-26 and a $12 million deficit for 2026-27. Seneca College in the Greater Toronto Area temporarily closed its Markham campus after international student numbers nosedived. British universities, too, earned £11.8 billion from international students in 2022-23. In AY 2024, one-third of their higher education institutions had funds to last only 100 days. 43% of institutions face budgetary issues and are now lobbying for visa reforms.
