Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed on Tuesday the names of four astronauts selected as test pilots for ISRO’s first human space flight mission, Gaganyaan (G1). All four are Indian Air Force fighter pilots who underwent extensive training in Russia since 2021 and then at the ISRO facility in Bengaluru. These four have been selected from a batch of twelve sent to Russia for training in 2020. Group Captain Prashanth B. Nair is a trained Sukhoi pilot from Kerela. He joined the Air Force in 1999, earning the prestigious Sword of Honour as the best-performing cadet. He also secured the first rank at the United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College. Group Captain Angad Prathap trained in Russia for 13 months. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla received training in space movement at Moscow’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Amidst the hue and cry surrounding Paytm Payments Bank getting barred, RBI granted PA licenses to startups like Zoho, Decentro, and Juspay. Zoho is an Enterprise Software-as-a-Service startup and the only such company to secure the permit. Decentro offers banking solutions via APIs and integration services to neo-banks, fintechs, and marketplaces. Juspay offers UPI, card, and wallet-based transactions. Other fintech startups like PhonePe, Pine Labs, Infibeam, Easebuzz, and Enkash received in-principle approvals from the central bank. This means they get 18 months to comply with all regulatory conditions to obtain the final PA license. Cashfree and Razorpay received their much-awaited licenses in December 2023. After having its application returned last year, PayU reapplied again, and its application is under process. Cred is also awaiting the nod. From the early to mid-2000s, TV platforms like Sony, Star, Viacom18, and Zee engaged in a bidding war to secure a movie’s streaming rights, sometimes before it went into production. OTT followed the same practice. Online streaming platforms offered a price based on the box office figures of the lead actor’s last movie. Since projections are not working now, OTT platforms are striking staggered deals in parts. They pay a percentage before theatrical release, and the contracts offer them the option to terminate the agreement in case of commercial failure. OTT platforms still buy big titles at a negotiated price but refrain from absorbing duds in their catalogue. They also decline deals on the grounds that films do not meet their standards. Banu Mushtaq, a lawyer and women’s rights activist, and her translator, Deepa Bhasti, won the International Booker Prize 2025 for her novel Heart Lamp ( Edeya Hanate in Kannada). It is a collection of 12 short stories on the Dalits and women, selected from her works published between 1990 and 2023. Mushtaq, born in 1948 in Hassan, Karnataka, emerged as a coveted literary voice during the Bandaya Sahitya (Rebel Literature) movement in the 1970s. Around 20 years ago, she faced a knife attack for advocating women’s rights to pray in mosques. The International Booker Prize includes a £50,000 cash reward, split equally between the writer and the translator. Each shortlisted author and translator receives £2,500. This is the first time a collection of short stories has won the British literary honour, and the second time a Kannada to English novel has been shortlisted. The first was U.R. Alden Global Capital’s eight newspapers in the US sued OpenAI and Microsoft over allegations that the two companies illegally used their content to fuel their AI chatbots. The dailies The New York Daily News, The Denver Post, The Chicago Tribune, The San Jose Mercury News, The Orlando Sentinel, The Sun Sentinel of Florida, The St. Paul Pioneer Press, and The Orange County Register filed the case in the Federal Court of the US Southern District of New York. The complaint mentions Microsoft and OpenAI used millions of copyrighted news articles without seeking permission from the newspapers to train their AI tools ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. The chatbots often display text from subscription-only articles without a backlink to the source. The publications are seeking a jury trial and fair compensation for using their news articles. Azerbaijan heavily relies on oil and gas trade, which accounts for 90% of its exports. India imported crude oil worth USD 663.63 million in FY23, when the overall India-Azerbaijan trade reached USD 779.28 million. In 2023, Azerbaijan imported rice worth USD 50 million; India supplied 84% of it. India imported goods worth USD 115.65 million in FY23, ET reported. Of these, tobacco accounted for the largest chunk of exports at USD 23.5 million, followed by tea and coffee, pharma, and then non-basmati rice at USD 3.2 million. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) boycotted all trade with Turkey and Azerbaijan, including travel and tourism. The community of top Indian traders urged the film industry to boycott these two countries for film shoots. While the Indian government has refrained from officially banning trade with them, visa applications and bookings for Turkey and Azerbaijan have dropped by 42% and 60%.
