Towards the target of 500 GW of renewable power capacity by 2030, India doubled its solar capacity and pushed its wind capacity by 21% between 2023 and 2024. Solar power accounts for 47% of the total renewable installed capacity, with Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Gujarat leading the charts. However, 38.3 GW of renewable capacity was cancelled between 2020 and 2024. This occurred due to technical and location challenges, delays in signing power supply agreements and land acquisition, and tender design problems, such as tariff caps, unflexible contracts, and unrealistic bidding conditions that discouraged developers from participating in such projects. Payment delays from power distribution companies and financial instability also contributed to cancellations. Globally, continued expansion of renewable energy often leads to grid disturbances, oversupply, and negative energy prices (when producers pay consumers to consume excess electricity). < Back Privacy, efficacy concerns haunt One Nation, One Student ID (APAAR) 4 Feb 2025 APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) is a unique 12-digit ID given to students to store and manage their academic records. The Education Ministry oversees the APAAR ID scheme, launched in October. It is a student’s permanent digital ID, integrated with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) scheme, to store academic records and make them readily available across PAN-India institutions. Creating a minor’s APAAR ID requires parental consent. The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act mandates verifying that the individual identifying as the parent is an adult. It is done by voluntarily providing identity and age details using virtual tokens issued by the central or state government and available via Digilocker. Privacy concerns surround how parental consent is obtained and the security of student records. While creating an APAAR ID is voluntary, parents feel forced to comply by institutions. Earlier, teachers used their own mobile numbers to meet deadlines for students’ Aadhaar enrolment. < Back Point of Sale service provider Worldline to offer payment services in India Ishita Nigam 27 Sept 2023 The approximately $8 billion company has been tying up with Indian banks for decades but has started acquiring its own merchants to offer payment services in India. French service provider Worldline has partnered with banks in India for more than two decades to install Android Point of Sale (PoS) devices in over 500,000 merchant outlets. But now it plans to join the bandwagon of payment services in the country. Worldline has started partnering directly with merchants like grocery stores, chemists, restaurants, and other retailers to offer online payment services. It plans to begin offering offline payments, which may need a fresh license as per RBI guidelines. It is also contemplating becoming a third party payment app on UPI interface. Worldline received an in-principle approval from RBI in December 2022 to become a payment aggregator. It partnered with Indian retail technology provider SignCatch in April 2023 to enroll 100,000 MSMEs within three months of launch. It will compete with players like Paytm, PhonePe, and Pine Labs. Worldline will serve the Indian market craving more omnichannel payment solutions. Previous Next

< Back ₹16,300 crore National Critical Minerals Mission approved 5 Feb 2025 The mission was announced in the July 2024 budget. The expected investment by PSUs in the project is ₹18,000 crore. In August 2019, the National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco), Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), and Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) set up a joint venture called Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL) to acquire mineral sources abroad. KABIL acquired 15,503-hectare land in Argentina to mine Lithium. It took four years to identify 30 strategic minerals that India needs. The National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM) outlines the policy framework for securing long-term sustainable supply till 2030-31. NCMM aims to strengthen the entire mineral value chain, starting with acquiring, exploring, beneficiation, processing, and recovery from products that have reached their end-of-life, like used electronics and industrial equipment. It provides for setting up mineral processing parks and encourages PSUs and private enterprises to acquire critical minerals abroad to meet India’s domestic needs. After exiting India in 2021, Ford is planning a comeback next year. Over the past six months, it has held many discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to discuss EV and ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle production at its old Maraimalai Nagar plant just outside Chennai. Talks of its return erupted in the market after Ford India filed for a design patent for the new Endeavour model, its bestselling product in the country. After its exit, several OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) showed interest in acquiring the plant, but nothing was finalised. Ford left India after suffering operational losses to the tune of $2 billion in a decade. Moreover, its product strategy did not succeed with Indian consumers, who prefer smaller, fuel-efficient cars. < Back Jio becomes the world’s leading mobile operator by data traffic 24 Apr 2024 Total data traffic on Jio’s network reached 40.9 exabytes against China Mobile’s 38 exabytes between January and March 2024. Reliance Jio now boasts the world’s largest 5G subscriber base, a staggering 108 million, which accounts for up to 28% of its total wireless data traffic. Last financial year, Jio's subscriber base grew from 449 to 482 million, with each user consuming an average of 28.7 GB per month. The demand for AirFiber was also robust, spanning across 5,900 towns. However, its average revenue per user (ARPU) remained stagnant for three quarters and ended the year at ₹182 due to affordable JioBharat plans and promotional unlimited 5G plans. Jio offers 30% of its network coverage for free to 5G subscribers. In comparison, Bharti Airtel’s user base grew from 339 to 350 million, and ARPU reached ₹211 from ₹200, but a lower data usage of 22.5 GB. Reliance Industries' consumer products division offers retailers disruptive pricing and higher margins for its beverage brand, Campa. This has pushed the two cola giants to prepare counter strategies like cheaper products through B-brands without diluting the brand image and trade margins of their flagship drinks, an ET report said. Coke also plans to improve the distribution of returnable glass bottles at ₹10, especially in tier-2 cities. One such brand at the ready for Coke is its local beverage RimZim Jeera, which was launched temporarily and has limited supply. Campa sells a 200ml bottle for ₹10 compared to 250ml bottles of Coke or Pepsi sold for ₹20. Campa’s 500ml bottle goes for ₹20 while Coke sells it for ₹30 and Pepsi for ₹40. Reliance Consumer offers its distributors a 6-8% margin, compared with 3.5-5% provided by its competitors. Coke and Pepsi are running tactical retail promotions without reducing the price. Le département d'État ordonné aux employés non urgents de l’USAID à Kinshasa, en République démocratique du Congo (RDC), de rentrer aux Etats-Unis en janvier et de se mettre en congé administratif. La violence s’intensifiait à cette époque en RDC et à Kinshasa. Les membres du service extérieur de l’agence ont déposé une plainte contre Trump, le département d'État et le Trésor pour démantèlement inconstitutionnel et illégal de l’USAID. Après l’inde, le Brésil a décidé de ne pas rejoindre l’initiative chinoise et de trouver plutôt d’autres moyens de collaborer avec les investissements chinois. Le pays sud-américain souhaite utiliser le cadre de « Belt and Road » pour trouver un chemin d’intégrer les projets brésiliens aux fonds d’investissement associés à l’initiative, sans rejoindre le groupe. Cette décision va à l’encontre des plans du président chinois Xi Jinping qui souhaitait faire de l’inclusion du Brésil un point fort de sa visite d’Etat a Brasilia le 20 novembre. On pensait que le projet phare d’infrastructure routière de la Chine ne bénéficierait pas au Brésil et compliquerait également ses relations avec une potentielle administration Trump. La semaine dernière, Celso Amorim, conseiller présidentiel spécial pour les affaires mondiales, et Rui Costa, chef de cabinet du président, se sont rendus à Pékin pour discuter de l’initiative et n’en sont pas revenus convaincus.
