American Airlines deployed Machine Learning for flight gate allocation to save an average of two minutes of taxi time for every flight, a reduction of 20%, and hours of gate planning time. This translated as up to 11 hours saved daily, and numerous gate changes and conflicts cut down drastically. Airlines have also saved 1.4 million gallons of fuel annually and reduced CO2 emissions by 13,400 metric tonnes per year. Besides, United Airlines saved two minutes per flight by boarding economy class passengers first, followed by the middle and the aisle. Southwest Airlines uses better signage and music on the bridge for faster boarding. Frontier has started using staircases directly to and from its Airbus’ second door to expedite boarding. < Back Faster immigration for int’l passengers at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru 29 Jan 2024 The government plans to roll out biometric checks, DigiYatra for international passengers to speed up the process. International passengers travelling to and from India will soon be offered biometric immigration services at New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai airports. The government is also working on making DigiYatra available to international passengers for electronic passport-based enrolment. The biometric check-in will be first available for international passengers. Indians will receive it after the issuance of much-awaited e-passports, which are expected to begin this year. E-passports will combine paper and electronic passports, with an RFID chip and antenna installed in the back cover. The passport’s first page and the chip will store the individual’s complete data. Indian government officials and diplomats have been receiving such passports since 2021. First-time visitors will still need to enrol and clear immigration with facial, iris, and fingerprint scanners to be able to use the e-clearance during departure. < Back Tata JLR, China’s Chery to develop EVs in China 25 Jun 2024 Tata Motor’s subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chinese Chery Automobile Company have formed a 50:50 joint venture, Chery-Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR). Chery Jaguar Land Rover will manufacture petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles in China. To date, it has produced five different models: the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque L, Jaguar E-PACE, Jaguar XFL, and Jaguar XEL. JLR is ready to license the Freelander brand to CJLR. This brand was produced between 1997 and 2015 and was succeeded by Discovery Sport in 2016. The new model developed by CJLR will be a mainstream electric vehicle (EV) for the Chinese market, slated for global export later. JLR has also announced the production of Range Rover in India. The brand was previously manufactured in the UK. Making it in India is expected to reduce the waiting period and bring the cost down by 18 to 22 per cent. It is the second biggest exit for an eCommerce founder after the Bansals exit from Flipkart in their deal with Walmart. In the country's second largest eCommerce deal, CaratLane's founder, Mithun Sacheti, sold another 27% stake to Titan for ₹4,621 crores. This brings the online jewellery retailer's total worth to ₹17,000 crores ($2 billion) and Titan's entire stake in the company to 98.28%. CaratLane’s relationship with Titan began in 2010 with a strategic partnership with its jewellery brand, Tanishq. In 2015, Titan’s then MD, Bhaskar Bhatt, expressed interest in investing in CaratLane. To get him onboard, CaratLane parted ways with its existing investor Tiger Global, who had just pumped $30 million into the company. Titan then bought a 62% stake in CaratLane in 2016 for around ₹563 crores and bought more shares between 2016 and 2019. < Back GST relief announced for foreign airlines, training, cancer drugs, helicopter rides 10 Sept 2024 Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is forming two groups of ministers: one to plan the GST framework on life and health insurance premiums, and the other to evaluate compensation cess. The GST Council announced exemptions for services imported by foreign airlines from their establishments outside India, including flight training courses. Before this announcement, the foreign airlines faced a tax invoice of ₹39,000 crore. The Council also sliced GST rates on some cancer medicines and savoury snacks like namkeens. Helicopter rides, except for charters, will also enjoy lower GST rates. Educational Institutes established under the state and central government, including the IITs and those exempted from income tax, will no longer be liable to pay GST on R&D grants. This move will regularise the show-cause notices that the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) issued to seven educational institutions. The two Group of Ministers (GoM) have to submit a report on the GST on life and health insurance premiums by October end. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary will lead the GoM and the panel on GST rate rationalisation. Previous Next

The Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 (RTE Act 2009) and Rules 2012 and the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) establish the minimum age limit for enrolling a child in Class 1 at six years completed as of June 1. The Union Government has asked and reminded state governments to ensure its implementation. The Kerela government revised the Class 1 admission criteria to six years. Karnataka had to implement the same in the academic year 2025-26. However, parents are still waiting for the government's announcement while seeking a relaxation on this criterion so that their children can participate in competitive exams and government jobs on time. The NEP states that over 85% of a child’s cognitive development happens before the age of six. Experts also warn against the negative impact of early admissions, suggesting that children are better prepared for formal education after the age of six. GMR Group secured funding of ₹6,300 crore from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), which it will use for refinancing the debt of GMR Enterprises Private Limited (GEPL), the promoter of GMR Airports. It will facilitate the repayment of external debt owned by GEPL and reinforce its ability to support the growth momentum at GMR Airports. The group maintains Delhi, Goa, and Hyderabad airports in India, besides the international airports in the Philippines and Indonesia. ADIA, the UAE’s largest sovereign wealth fund that invests on behalf of the Abu Dhabi government, started an approximate $5 billion fund to begin operations in GIFT City, Gujarat. GVK Group had secured a ₹7,600 crore funding from ADIA, the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, and PSP Investments in 2019. Tier 1 and 2 customers are opting for OTT packs over DTH, and rural subscribers are choosing Doordarshan Free Dish. Hence, Airtel is ready to strike a second deal with the Tata Group to boost its presence in the OTT segment. Tata Play, formerly Tata Sky, is the market leader with 20.77 million users and a 32.7% share. Airtel ranks second with a 27.8% share. Tata Play removed some Sony channels to cut the losses, leading to a spat between the two. Tata Sons bought Temasek Holding’s 10% stake in Tata Play for ₹835 crore in April, thus bringing its ownership to 70% and company valuation to $1 billion. Airtel may buy Tata Play for a similar amount as the Temasek deal. After merging with 21st Century Fox, Walt Disney absorbed Sky’s 30% stake in Tata Play. Also, digital gold sales saw a year-on-year increase of 60%. Indians are turning to lab-grown diamonds (LGDs), which are cheaper than natural diamonds. As per Limelight Diamonds, the largest LGD brand in the country, their sales grew by 120% this year compared to Diwali 2022. One carat solitaire LGD rings cost between ₹80,000 and ₹1 lakh, down from ₹2 lakh a year ago and far lower compared to a one carat natural diamond ring that costs around ₹5 lakh. LGD sales have also increased in Tier 2 cities, where brands plan to expand. The number of LGD retailers in India has gone up to 4,000 from just a few last year. PM Modi gifted Greenlab’s 7.5 carat LGD to US First Lady, Jill Biden, on his June visit. Besides, older millennials and young parents are investing around ₹13,000 on average for existing customers and ₹17,500 for new customers in digital gold via payment and banking platforms. India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) approved five semiconductor units. Meanwhile, Applied Materials Inc. is spearheading talks with many domestic and global suppliers to establish an R&D unit in the country. Of the five approved units, Micron Technology is establishing a facility in Sanand, Gujarat, and will roll out the first chip in 2025. Tata Electronics is developing the second facility in Dholera, Gujarat, in association with Taiwanese Powerchip Semiconduction Manufacturing Corp. Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT) will develop a facility in Morigaon, Assam, with a capacity of 48 million chips a day. CG Power, Japan’s Renesas Electronics Corp, and Thailand’s Stars Microelectronics will together establish a facility in Sanand to produce 15 million chips daily. Mysuru-based Kaynes Semicon will build a facility in Sanand with a capacity of 63 lakh chips daily.
