The law specifies that personal data of kids and persons with disabilities should be processed only with parental or guardian consent. The age gating clause stipulates that companies must know who visits them online and secure their verifiable consent. This has triggered a series of doubts among businesses. Industry experts translate this as all companies must deploy age gating measures involving a three-step verification of the child’s age, the parental identity, and proving that the two are related. < Back FSSAI conducting surprise audits on leading Q-commerce dark stores 3 Jul 2024 Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) officials have been conducting surprise audits on all dark stores and some direct-to-consumer food brands for the past few weeks. Prompted by the recent lapses in food hygiene, FSSAI started surprise audits for leading quick commerce (Q-Commerce) brands across India. Thus, brands are forced to exert more hygiene measures and extra caution in adopting new, smaller brands on their platforms. The recent series of contamination with food products delivered by Q-Commerce apps caught the attention of food safety regulators nationwide. The Telangana Commissioner of Food Safety found severe violations related to hygiene and storage conditions at Blinkit warehouses near Hyderabad and its Faridabad dark store, where allegedly medicines were being illegally sold. This triggered checks with other brand warehouses everywhere. The delivery platforms argue that many issues happen at the manufacturing level that affect product quality. Manufacturers highlight that product handling significantly impacts the condition at the time of delivery, ultimately ruining the manufacturer’s brand image. < Back Indian space tech startup to test Satellite Launch Vehicle with 3D printed engine 30 Nov 2023 Last month, Agnikul raised $26.7 million from Rocketship.vc and Celesta Capital. Its customers will be anyone building a small satellite and targeting a low Earth orbit. Chennai-based space tech startup Agnikul plans to test its first flight with the world’s first 3D printed engine before this year ends. The company was incubated in IIT Madras and specialises in building Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV). If the test is successful, Agnikul will become India’s second private manufacturer to build small SLVs. The first company to do it was Skyroot Aerospace, that launched Vikram S in November 2022. Agnikul plans its first commercial orbital launch next year. This final technology demonstrator test will be conducted on the IIT Madras campus. The launch vehicle is ready, and once the team receives the final nod from ISRO, the SLV will be all set to go. Their rocket, Agnibaan, will lift off vertically and follow a predetermined path. < Back RBI uplifts year-long ban, grants Payment Aggregator licences 20 Dec 2023 Razorpay, Cashfree, and a few other startups received the licence. However, Paytm and PayU didn't get the central bank's approval. Reserve Bank of India uplifted the year-long ban on fintech startups like Razorpay, Cashfree and gave them the license to operate as Payment Aggregators (PA). Besides these, Google Pay, payment gateway Paymentz, expense management company, Encash, and neobanking startup Open have also received the PA licence. However, Paytm and PayU are yet to receive the central bank's nod. The PA licence allows a company to add new merchants and add various financial offerings to their portfolio. RBI had put the embargo on these startups last year when they failed to monitor payout transactions and carry out risk profiling. While RBI continued its multi-level checks of these startups, these companies were forced to look for alternate revenue mechanisms. Razorpay and Cashfree had started focusing on international markets and offline payments and remittances. < Back Cipla to market and distribute insulin inhalation drug 23 Dec 2024 Cipla received regulatory approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for exclusive marketing and distribution. Afrezza is the only non-injectable powdered insulin for type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus patients. MannKind Corporation USA created the drug and received FDA approval in June 2014. Cipla will procure Afrezza from MannKind and distribute and market it in India. Sanofi bought worldwide marketing and distribution rights in 2016 but dropped due to poor sales. Afrezza is a rapid-action insulin deliverable through an inhaler at the beginning of a meal. Taken orally, it begins working within 12 minutes and dissolves quickly into the lungs, delivering insulin directly to the bloodstream. It helps reduce the spike in post-meal blood sugar levels. The effect lasts 2-3 hours and resembles the body’s response to insulin. Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, and Sanofi currently control the insulin market in India. Insulin costs between ₹1,000 - ₹5,000, with a single injection available for around ₹150. Afrezza’s price is yet to be determined. Previous Next

Uber also started charging a distance-based booking fee that rises with the kilometres on a ride. In a bid to turn profitable by slicing down the per order cost, B2C eCommerce firms like Zomato, Big Basket’s BB Now, Swiggy and Instamart, Blinkit, and Zepto started levying a per order or per booking flat fee between ₹2-5. Uber recently began charging a distance-wise fee for every ride. eCommerce companies struggling to charge restaurant partners and drivers started charging the consumers a few extra bucks on every order to turn profitable and push up margins. Zomato experimented with a charge of ₹2 per order in metro cities and will now expand the flat fee structure to more locations and even hike the fee to ₹3. Quick commerce companies have been levying handling charges for quite some time to stay financially sustainable and provide exceptional services. Reliance Ajio is building a similar platform. Reliance Ajio and Amazon are building new marketplaces to compete with Meesho’s low price, unbranded product offerings. The upcoming marketplaces, Reliance Ajio Street and Amazon Bazaar, will offer a zero-commission model to sellers. The products will include apparel, shoes, jewellery, watches, luggage, home and kitchen, garden, and sports goods, among others, below ₹600. Amazon Bazaar will be integrated into the main app. Besides onboarding fresh sellers, it allows existing sellers to move relevant products to the new platform. Ajio Street offers a 15-day payment settlement to lure new merchants. Amazon Bazaar will offer deliveries within 2-3 days. Meesho offers zero commission or referral fee for merchants. It earns through add-ons like logistics services for sellers and advertising. Amazon Bazaar will not charge any closing fee to merchants using its Easy Ship service. To grow in India, these brands need to sell low-priced, difficult-to-find goods called longtail products at zero-commission models. Previous Next
