Hyderabad, on the other hand, saw a decline in such spaces by 19%. More consumers preferring to shop online or in bigger malls that offer more enhanced overall shopping experience. But this hasnt stopped the mushrooming of malls. Along with the number of ghost malls, the Gross Leasable Area (GLA) spiked by 288% year-on-year in 2023. Its financial impact on retailers, landowners, and developers can be pinned at around ₹6,700 crore. The small malls are facing challenges in attracting footfalls and tenants to occupy retail space. < Back RBI bars Kotak Mahindra Bank from onboarding new customers digitally 24 Apr 2024 Despite repeated warnings over the last two years, Kotak did not fix its IT systems. On Wednesday, RBI barred new customer onboarding via online and mobile channels and issued new credit cards, citing “serious deficiencies and non-compliances” in Kotak Mahindra Bank's technology platforms. Kotak is the third-most valued bank in India in terms of market capitalisation. The move may also impact the bank’s existing co-branded card deals. The ban will not affect existing banking and credit card customers. Its branches continue to operate as usual. RBI found non-compliance in Kotak’s IT inventory management, user access management, patch and change management, vendor risk management, data security and leak prevention strategy, and business continuity and disaster management. As per RBI, the inadequate technological infrastructure caused severe and frequent Core Banking System failures in digital banking channels in 2022-2023. To settle a $16 million dispute, the commercial airline leasing company Genesis will acquire a $4 million stake in SpiceJet at ₹100 per share. SpiceJet will pay Genesis $6 million in cash. The total settlement amount of $10 million covers cash and equity components. Subject to meeting the settlement terms, both parties will withdraw the ongoing litigations related to this matter at the appropriate forums. SpiceJet has settled its aviation disputes in the past two months with Aircastle of Ireland, Wilmington Trust SP Services, and Shannon Engine Support. For the past two years, Genesis and SpiceJet have been locked in a legal battle over lease payment and financial obligation issues. SpiceJet had leased five aircraft from Genesis Aircraft Services before the payment issues began. SpiceJet intends to reduce its financial liabilities. Brent Crude Oil dropped by 6.5% this week to $68.34, the lowest since December 2021. OPEC+, the alliance between oil producing nations from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), led by Saudi Arabia, will produce more oil between April 2025 and September 2026. It had reduced production from November 2023. Along with this, the US tariffs levied on Canada, China, and Mexico, and allegedly, Kazakhstan’s ongoing overproduction, caused the crude oil prices to decline. Crude inventories grew by 3.6 million barrels to 433.8 million last week. The US also ended oil producer Chevron’s license to operate in Venezuela and export oil. This decision may reduce the supply by 200,000 barrels per day. Also, the US tariffs may cause a correction of around ₹3,000 per tonne in Indian steel prices. The panel noted that Trump did not have the authority to use IEEPA to impose tariffs, and it violates constitutional limits on presidential power. On Tuesday, the Department of Financial Services met with several banks and startups like Paytm and Razorpay to gauge their preparedness to battle financial and banking frauds. 70 lakh mobile connections linked to cybercrime reported through digital intelligence platforms have been disconnected. Over 70% of banking transfer frauds were related to KYC requirements. Fraudsters impersonate bank officials to gather victims’ personal information, coerce them to share OTPs, engage in identity thefts, and conduct smishing by stealing customer data once they click on a link received via SMS. In October, the Bank of Baroda suspended 60 employees, including 11 Assistant General Managers, area managers, and zonal heads, after investigating the bank’s KYC fraud. It came to light after RBI asked the bank to stop new customer onboarding due to registration irregularities in its digital app, BOB World. This year, till September, Bengaluru alone reported 12,615 cybercrime cases worth ₹470.05 crore. Previous Next

The Modi government plans to make India a global chipmaking hub. It is evaluating $21 billion proposals from international and domestic companies to set up manufacturing facilities. It is offering incentives to international corporations to set up facilities and promises to bear half the cost of approved projects with an initial budget of $10 billion. American chipmaker Micron Technology set up a $2.75 billion assembly and testing facility in Gujarat. Israel’s Tower Semiconductor Limited and Tata Group have proposed a $9 billion and a $8 billion chip fabrication facility in Gujarat. If approved, Tower Semiconductor’s facility will be India's first multinational fabrication plant. The company manufactures components for large corporations like Broadcom Inc. and the electric vehicles industry. It plans to make around 80,000 silicon wafers monthly in the next decade.
