Online food delivery giant Zomato raised platform fee to ₹4 effective January 1st, 2024. This fee charged per order was introduced at ₹2 in August 2023 and is levied on all orders in most metro cities along with the delivery charges. The platform claimed to have delivered almost as many orders on New Year's Eve 2023 as on New Year’s Eve 2015 to 2020, six years combined. It had hiked its platform fee to ₹9 per order on December 31st, 2023. Zomato waives the delivery fee for loyalty program Zomato Gold members, but the platform fee is levied on all orders. The platform fee is considered a significant contributing factor to its Profit After Tax figures in Q2 FY2024, which surged 71% to ₹36 crore compared to just ₹2 crore the previous quarter. Zomato bought Blinkit in June 2022 for $568 million, now implied to be worth $13 billion. In March 2023, it was evaluated at around $2 billion. Blinkit’s gross order value (GOV) is expected to grow at a CAGR of 53% between FY 2024 and 2027, compared to Zomato’s projected CAGR of 38%. The massive, unorganised grocery industry, high population density in urban cities, and a profitable ratio of delivery costs to average order values drive the demand for Blinkit. The absence of intermediaries and organised channels in the online grocery domain and the large scale of operations give quick commerce platforms the pricing advantage. With around 7,000 SKUs, these platforms are better organised than Kirana stores, which own around 2,000 SKUs. Quick commerce was launched with Zepto in April 2021. Times Group signed the JV to start the Pickleball World Series. Times Group signed a joint venture agreement with Pickleball Asia, the Asian player community, to begin a new league called Pickleball World Series. The series will start in the US and move across continents, hosting six major events annually. The individual format of the World Series will have 64 players and six teams of four players each from different countries, including the US and India. Pickleball World Rankings will grade players and allot them points, allowing them to qualify for the World Series. This ranking system will allow players to emerge from different corners of the world. India is the growing hotspot for the new sport in town, Pickleball. The player community, Pickleball Asia, has gained 60 million players worldwide. Experts believe this sport will overtake tennis in the next decade. < Back Govt asked Amazon, Flipkart to setup ONDC storefronts on their portals 29 Apr 2024 Establishing its storefront on eCommerce portals’ home pages will help Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) expand operations and efficiency. ONDC, launched in January 2023 to counter eCommerce’s dominance, is the brainchild of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Commerce Ministry. It allows small players easy access to an open sellers’ network without paying a significant commission or signing up on eCommerce portals. It is now discussing phased participation with Amazon and Flipkart to launch its storefront on their home pages. Amazon confirmed integrating its logistics network and Smart Commerce services in February 2023. This will give Amazon’s users access to the product offerings from ONDC’s over 105,000 non-mobility sellers. Flipkart’s logistics arm Ekart and Snapdeal integrated with ONDC in December 2023. ONDC is also in talks with the National Restaurants Association of India, representing over 500,000 restaurants, for last-mile delivery, order tracking, and network listing. < Back Emergency mock drill on May 7th 6 May 2025 This is the first mock drill after 1971, when India and Pakistan last went to war. 244 districts across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, Manipur, and Meghalaya will undergo the mock drill on May 7th. It will include air-raid siren activation to alert people in case of aerial threats, blackouts to mimic wartime stealth procedures, cleaning and inspection of underground bunkers, operationalising communication with the Indian Air Force, camouflaging critical installations like power plants, training civilians in first aid, firefighting, emergency shelter use, evacuation rehearsals for civilians, simulating backup command centres. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is supervising the nationwide drill. It is part of civil defence efforts under the Civil Defence Rules, 1968. The MHA instructed district authorities for coordination, home guards, and civil defence wardens for ground operations, and NCC, NSS volunteers, members of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, and students to raise awareness and support. < Back Income tax collections more than doubled since FY15 18 Oct 2024 Personal income tax collections spiked by 294.3% from ₹2.66 lakh crore in FY15 to ₹10.55 lakh crore in FY24, with Maharashtra leading the pack. Improved compliance, better awareness, and reduced corporate tax led to India’s income tax reserves filling up. Compared to 5.7 crore taxpayers in FY15, 10.41 crore Indians paid taxes in FY24. The number of IT returns increased more than twice from ₹4.04 crore in FY15 to ₹8.61 crore in FY24. Corporate tax collections also rose by 112.85% from ₹4.28 lakh crore to ₹9.11 lakh crore in this duration. The tax-to-GDP ratio was boosted by 6.64% in the current financial year FY25 compared to 5.55% in FY15. However, the direct tax contribution to the overall tax collection increased slightly from 56.16% to 56.72% in the same period. Leading the pack in terms of contributions to direct tax collections were Maharashtra, Karnataka, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, accounting for more than 72% or ₹14.19 lakh crore of the total ₹19.61 lakh crore. In 2024, Godrej Properties sold properties worth ₹28,800 crore and emerged as the biggest listed real estate company in 2024 vis-à-vis sales bookings. It had sold properties worth ₹22,527 crore in 2023-24. It now intends to hit the ₹30,000 crore sales mark in FY2025, breaking through the company’s target of ₹27,000 crore sales bookings this fiscal. In November 2024, it acquired a 53-acre land in Joka, Kolkata. It has a potential 1.3 million square feet of saleable area and a projected revenue potential of ₹500 crore. The Indian real estate sector raised ₹22,230 crore from Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) last year, accounting for 16% of the total QIPs issued in the year, the highest for any sector. Godrej was the top fundraiser, raising ₹6,000 crore in the December quarter, followed by Prestige (₹5,000 crore). When 28,000 barrels of malt lying in their warehouse for seven years matured twice quicker in the extreme Indian climate, Piccadilly Agro decided to turn it into whiskey. Master blender Surrinder Kumar, who worked with Amrut Distilleries, transformed it into a whiskey. Multiple tasting sessions with the Indian, Japanese, and Scottish connoisseurs made them realize they had a winner swirling in their hands. Piccadilly Agro was set up in Indri, Haryana, three decades ago by former Congressman and lawmaker Venod Kumar Sharma. After striking liquid gold, it first launched single malt under the brand name Old Bombay’ but renamed it to Indri, which also means senses in Sanskrit. Since its launch in 2021, Piccadilly has sold 18,000 cases till March 2023. Its stock has surged from ₹25 in December 2021 to an all-time high of ₹328 last month. < Back Delhi High Court dismisses Celebi’s appeal 7 Jul 2025 The Turkish airport ground handling agency had challenged the revocation of its security license. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) had revoked Celebi’s license on May 15th, citing a threat to civil aviation security. Celebi staff had access to sensitive areas at the airport, like the tarmac and cargo zones. The Delhi High Court dismissed Celebi’s appeal against its license revocation. It argued that the government did not follow due process and grant it a hearing before cancelling its license. The High Court found no procedural impropriety in the government’s decision. Justice Sachin Datta pointed out that judicial principles give primacy to national security considerations when weighed against the principle of due process. Celebi manages ground and cargo operations for nine major airports in India, including 70% of Mumbai airport operations. It was responsible for passenger, flight, and cargo handling, postal services, and bridges and warehouse management. It had been operating in India for 15 years and employed over 10,000 people.
